Just got back from busting out a dam on my creek. Water had been flowing over my bridge much of the winter, and with the snow melt it got up about 6 inches over the top.

I hiked downstream and found a beautiful natural dam...as nicely constructed as if done by beavers...lots of branches woven together with leaves hugging the branches, packed so tightly that no water was flowing through, only over the top...a pretty little 2 foot high waterfall on a "J' shaped dam. A 35 foot cedar had died, fallen over the creek, with its tough, rot resistant branches acting as a frame.

I hated to destroy it. The cedar gave me something to hang onto as I pulled a few strategic sticks and logs out of the way, and kicked at the smaller branches that were holding the leaf-pack. What a rush of water that spilled through...a mini tsunami heading downstream.

After about a half hour, the water level was getting closer to normal levels, and it started to rain again.

The most fun was my Chesapeake Bay retriever bobbing for sticks as they washed through the opening over and over again.

Good morning. The wind is still blowing steady this morning and we had no significant rain yesterday so it's starting to dry the surface nicely. It won't support my weight but a little dog can now easily skim the surface without getting muddy paws.

I'm up early. Been sick since Saturday evening. Lost 7 lbs in 6 hours. Achy back, shoulders, head ache. I got my flu vaccine back in early December. Maybe this is just one of those "mild" cases in lieu of the full out flu. I missed work yesterday, my gut still feels like I just got sucker punched. I finally have been able to eat a few crackers and some chicken broth. I've been days now without coffee....

good morning all, 50 going up to 58 on a clear day.
but...an unexpected .11 rain last night hopefully did not make things slick for the long delayed stone truck at 8am this morning.

Going to be a busy day, gutter men come to put gutters on the new building and the wing sheds of the barn.
And then...I get to play in the mud even more and dig ditches for the gutter water to run underground back to the six foot deep ditch.
Going to use the tree digger attachment for that and lay some corrugated plastic pipe in there and then cover it all over.
Then...and finally then..., I can clean up the area around the new building and make it nice for the duration.
for now it's been clean it up, rip it up, repeat.

Kyle, sorry you feel crummy, keep drinking fluids.
Billy, that must be a sturdy bridge to take running water over it.

Got the base installed on a VDOT turn lane installed yesterday top layer today. A couple of quick hitting showers mixed in between. Today is much cooler high in upper 40s

interesting short video just released of the splashing of a new Littoral ship in Marinette Wisconsin. I remember Marinette because for about twenty years, maybe 30, Marinette shipyards use to make aluminum hulled boats for the US pleasure market. Only Burger, also from Wisconsin, who built huge yachts, built in aluminum once Chris Craft went to fiberglass.
Aluminum yachts/ships are high maintenance, very tough to keep paint on them and lots of anti-galvanic corrosion systems on them, but like the Grumman bread trucks, they last forever...and will dent instead of puncture/fail usually but they sink too. Since there are millions of aluminum small fishing boats out there, most of us have sat in one one time or another.

Yes they sink, which all cruise lines know, as almost all cruise liners today are made from aluminum. And who builds many if not most of them? Fincantieri in Italy.
And who does Fincantieri now own? Marinette Shipbuilding. An Italian cruise liner builder builds our warships. I guess we trust the Italians...
The big stuff comes out of New Orleans, Maine or Norfolk I suppose, but once WWII started Marinette was "drafted" and ever since they have made aluminum boats for the military. And I bet they were good boats. Likely a little noisy...not much sound deadening in that material. Any of you real Navy guys I'm sure can comment on hull noises.

I grew up an hour away from the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where old destroyers and other mothballed ships are kept. If you drive North on Route 95 through Philadelphia and look down to the right you'll still see some ships left there. And occasionally a smaller warship would be brought up river for repairs and refurb there. Now that was neat to go boating around. If you got too close, the Navy police would come rocketing out at you but where else could you get close, really close to big armored ships?
Something tells me they keep private boats even further away now...

Good Morning. Cool front came in last night. 56˚ heading to 70˚ sunny. Kyle do you have the same thing your son had? Keep hydrated.

I got the Farmall back together by noon and was mowing yesterday. The new parts are working good - no slippage. It only took me 3 months to recover from that bad week when everything broke, golf cart/Farmall/presssure washer.

I went to the mailbox after fixing the Farmall and Hustler is recalling my Fastrack for an "Upgrade" to be preformed "IMMEDIATELY". I wonder what that is all about? They just call it a "CAMPAIGN SB536".

No pix from yesterday's dam demolition - was actually afraid I'd take a spill and didn't want my phone to get wet. Drew, I way overbuilt the bridge, in 1985, and anchored it well. It still handles my truck and tractor well (knock on wood)...at least it's not on the VDOT watch list of deteriorating bridges that need replacing.

Found out not too much deer damage means $1500. Also found out we have $100 deductible on the new Prius. Have to assume it is the same on the other two cars. I will be changing that.

Mamma was a Groundhog's Day baby. She has got to celebrate it 88 times so far. We are all going out to a new restaurant in Marianna tonight for the occasion.

55 now going to 83 today. So foggy out there I can't see the backyard fence. Have to go into town today and paint a door and hang a ceiling fan. Started putting the wagon back together yesterday and cutting the lumber out for the seat. Took pics but need to resize them to post, even my phone takes to big of picture. :confused3:

Kyle, hope you are feeling better and keep that bug in TX! I am trying to lose weight, but not like that. Remember coffee is not hydration, so I will have an extra cup just for you.

48 this morning and headed to 71 today. Strong to severe storms expected this afternoon and evening.

Well some of my feed showed up yesterday, so I get to put it down today. Doctors visit went good but wife was unhappy she talked about allergy shots. Mom had a bad reaction to some about 15 years ago and my family is gun shy of them now. Have hay out to cows so good for about 5 days now. Have heaters to turn on after feed is run. Hope it's a short day.

When I hit a deer in our Prius, let me correct that, When the deer ran into the front side bumper of the Prius it looked like a basketball hit the bumper it was $900 damage (new hood and headlight bracket) with $500 deductible. You don't even want to know about the rabbit in the front grill. Had to get a country vehicle because of the kamikaze wildlife. Did you have to get a new aluminum hood also?
