still nice to see more oil burner options, even if it is an economy option, vs a performance option.

Spied: 2017 Ford F-150 TurboDiesel - PickupTrucks.com News

Makes me wonder if; because it's a Ford, does it make it more than just a grocery getter?;) Doesn't really matter, I'm just glad more diesel trucks are being offered.

Years ago I heard that the 3.5L ecoboost started out as a 3.0L Mazda diesel engine that was then modified, punched out, and converted to gas. Thus the heavy bottom end of the EB engine.

i'd rather have a gas engine made out of a diesel design, than a diesel made from a gas. :)

Not true.

The 3.5L EcoBoost is the same as Ford's 3.5L gasser, which was designed and built from the ground up as a gas engine with turbo-charging in the plans. It's known as the Duratec line of engines.

Years ago I had ano Olds Cutlass that was diesel. GM used a gas V8 and converted it to diesel. I don't recall exactly the year. I think it was mid 80s. It needed a lot of maintenance.

My BIL inherited a Cadillac diesel. It only needed a little maintenance, just swapped in a gas engine :)

I see quite a few camo unreleased vehicles in mid Michigan. But did not see the diesel F150.

Although in another thread I had a typo and claimed my daughter had an F150 (actually F350) diesel dually. Someone caught my mistake. Shrug

Isn't GM famous for using a diesel made from gas?

And concerning the Ford - will it come in a dually w/ an 8' bed :)

Ford did it in their tractor line.

In late 52 the moved from flathead gassers to a red tiger ohv. In about 58 they worked that red tiger ihv into a diesel.

By late 64, ford came out with a new design. 2000,3000,4000 were 3 cyl, gas or diesel, but wasn't a diesel based on a gasser, but the other way around this time.

If I'm getting a pre 65 ford, I want gas, post 65, I want diesel.

The 5.7L diesel that was offered by GM in the late '70's and early '80's was gasser based. The 6.2L/6.5L was designed and/or made by Detroit diesel for GM, as a diesel from the start, for the light truck market, in 1982.

Interested in seeing what the f150 diesel offers.

Ok. Mine was the 5.7 early 80s.

I had one of those, an 82 Chevy wagon. I retired it for a 1988 Thunderbird, it had 286,000 miles and the only issue it had was the injector pump which GM replace free at 98,000 miles.

"There is an enormous misconception that the 350 Olds is based on GM's 350 gas engine. While they share similar architectural dimensions, this is a rumor. Not only would such a design be engineering suicide, but the gas engine would never live up to the cylinder pressures created by the 22.5 : 1 compression diesel. In fact, GM's official statement regarding these rumors was that "All of the major parts: block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, and lifters have been strengthened to handle the higher compression ratio." The rumor that the engines are related likely stems from a combination of the following:
• Because of the engine's identical bore and stroke, the Olds diesel could be manufactured using pre-existing tooling.
• Not only is it easy to assume the 350 diesel is based on the 350 gas engine, but owners and outsiders alike needed to place the engine's problems on something.
Regardless, the 350 Olds was capable of up to 30 miles per gallon in the right car and with the right driver. GM continuously tried to sell buyers on its Olds diesel by identifying it with "prestige" and "status". Unfortunately, by the time most of the kinks were worked out, their customers had fled. "

If this happens it will be interesting to see where the ecoboosts end up, will it be the diesel and just the bigger ecoboost. I thought ford released a statement a couple years ago stating they were not pursuing light diesels and that DI turbo gas engines were how they were meeting fuel economy standards (going from my memory so this might be all false). It's interesting how fast things change in the auto world, but we all benefit from the competition so I say bring it all on.

All their time was being spent on the new F150 platform, and the new transmission. With the new platform already out, and the transmission soon to be in the trucks, they seem to be adding new smaller segment projects like the diesel, the hybrid, and the CNG. None of these will overtake their main gasers, but all the little pieces help.

You guys may find this diesel story interesting.

In 1990 I bought a used 1986 GMC "Jimmy" diesel (6.2L) with 50,000 miles.
I paid the seller $8000.
I treated it well, rarely drove it in winter, and had it repainted twice.
Over the years it needed only minimal maintenance. New water pump/alternator/belts/hoses/exhaust/fluids/filters/brakes/tires/interior carpet, etc.
Last May (2015) I sold it on E-Bay (with 175,000 miles).
A 29 year old vehicle: Winning bid: $8200 !!!!
I WAS A HAPPY CAMPER !!!!!
