Loitering in a restaurant....

I agree strongly with the OP. Funny thing, I saw a new sign at a McDonald's this weekend. It said " No loitering - 30 minute time limit" or something similar. I have often seen at other fast food places, a group at the table of knowledge many times but it is usually pretty early in the morning and not a lot of people inside. I guess it has become a problem at least at this location.

We have had instances of a particular patron at a local Hardees that was asked by management to not come back. He was one of the group of older gentlemen that meet at the restaurant every morning for coffee. All of the other group stay at their tables and eat and drink coffee and talk among themselves. However, the one particular fella was leave the group and wander around the restaurant, go up to every table that someone was setting at and start a conversation. This may sound harmless, but it became annoying to several other diners, including my wife and I. Many of the diners told the manager that so long as "Earl" (name changed to protect the innocent) was present, they would no longer be coming to eat. The manager tried to accommodate everybody by asking Earl to stay at his table, but he would not oblige, thus he was asked not to return.

He took his business to the local McDonalds, where, believe it or not, the same thing happened after a short time.

I don't think any of the restaurants mind the local loiterers in these cases - because they usually buy a breakfast biscuit or meal and drink coffee and generally aren't taking up space that other patrons need.

I too take notice of how busy a restaurant is and try to expedite my time at the table. We don't often eat out at "sit-down, table service" restaurants, and I'm certainly not one to stay at my table after the ticket is paid. Very often, I'm ready with my payment by the time the server arrives with the check because I'm done eating and ready to go - I'm not usually in that big of a hurry, I just generally have other things to do rather than sit at the table once I'm done.

Good luck and take care.

wander around the restaurant, go up to every table that someone was setting at and start a conversation?

We had a drunk guy do that once, he found out we were celebrating a birthday party, so he sent the waitress out to buy a birthday cake, then he picked up the tab for everybody's meal when we left. Heck of a nice guy even though he was nearly fall down drunk.

Turns out he owned the restaurant, as well as the local funeral parlour plus several other business in town. which kind of explains why he wasn't asked to leave.

rtimgray hit THAT ONE right on the head..."generally are not taking up space the other patrons need...." Tell you guys something...I have not been in a McDonalds or other fast food place for at least 5 years now and have NEVER been in a coffee shop of any kind, so I don't know what they are like today. I posted on Facebook about my experience with our loitering table companions and although I did not name anyone, two of my so called FB "friends" sent me nasty messages about my post... and they know who they are... and maybe next time they loiter maybe they will remember..fat chance...they are my wife's friends so I am stuck with them for now....

We had a guy who used to come in to the local restaraunt and visit every table... then try to sell you Amway. :(
It wasn't long before he was told to stay away.

I think I know the problem... It's the ME! ME! ME! ME! ME! generation.

If you must know, the place was quite busy and every table was occupied during our stay there, had they paid attention they would have noticed that. Experience told me they would not care if I told them about the waiting customers, because they are just inconsiderate to begin with. Sad thing is, they are all my age (early to middle 60's) and you think they would know better.

And you go out with them all the time anyway??? :confused3: :laughing:

I'm just playin' with ya! - NOT trying to start an argument.

I have a long time friend that is kind of the same way although he would tell you that he's very considerate. I am of the opinion that if I sit and talk and take up space drinking anything with free refills that I need to tip the waitress EXTRA well. Of course, you can kind of get the hint that it's time to go when the free refills stop coming! I'm a pretty good tipper (usually 20% including the tax) whereas my friend is a 15% before tax guy. And he's religious about that. If I go to Waffle House and have great service on a $10 meal (about the norm at W-H), I will leave $3 or $4. My friend will calculate 15% of $9.38 (or whatever the bill is) and leave that amount pretty much to the closest nickle.

What's wrong with being a cheap *******? From what I've read in the "What is the WORST injury you have ever sustained?" thread it's a heck of a lot better than being a clumsy *******! :D

Or, in some cases you could substitute "Stupid" for "Clumsy".

Good food AND good service gets a bigger tip from me. A good sense of humour gets an even bigger tip.

Morning "lingerers" at the fast food joints, lol! One saturday morning, I picked up my Amish farrier who had been up late because he had been at an auction. He asked if I would mind stopping at the local gas station/coffee joint/microwave breakfast joint so he could grab a sausage samdwich and a coffee, again lol! I accompanied him in and bought him breakfast and a coffee for myself.

I pretty much blew my swig of coffee when we got back in my car to leave and he pointed out the group of men sitting around. He said "that's the dead peter club".

I am with the OP.

Funny and on topic comic in the latest New Yorker (Don't judge me). It is in a mildly crowded coffee shop with people working at different tables. The women behind the counter is telling a customer "The coffee is free, but we have started charging rent for the tables".
