Also don't wear synthetic fabric if you can help it. Nylons and polyester are really bad about melting or even catching fire easily. Cotton is the best, and that covered by leather is even better. I dropped just a big blob of solder down by shoe onto a nylon sock, and I thought it was never going to stop burning. Solder on just skin is not as bad a solder on synthetic fabrics because it melts and the liquid transfers heat to your skin for a good long while. I can't imagine what hot steel would do.. Solder melts at around 650 to 700, steel melts a good deal higher than that.
