Also don't wear synthetic fabric if you can help it. Nylons and polyester are really bad about melting or even catching fire easily. Cotton is the best, and that covered by leather is even better. I dropped just a big blob of solder down by shoe onto a nylon sock, and I thought it was never going to stop burning. Solder on just skin is not as bad a solder on synthetic fabrics because it melts and the liquid transfers heat to your skin for a good long while. I can't imagine what hot steel would do.. Solder melts at around 650 to 700, steel melts a good deal higher than that.

Good point... in fact I have asked my wife not to buy clothes for me that are nylon or polyester. Not just for welding... for general wear.

Pacific has a good house brand welding glove. They are around $10.00 a pair. When you walk in the front door, they are on the far left wall, right up close to Larry's office. They are blue in color, and say Pacific on them.

Yep I have two pair now. They give them away at their annual open house. I rarely use gauntlets as I find them cumbersome with my hands that get numb easy. Pacific has some good leather drivers gloves that I use for most everything. I buy them 6 at a time, I also use TIG gloves for sustained arc welding as they are thin and pliable. I learned long ago to keep my fingers out of the puddle, pick up hot pieces with pliers, and to roll down and button my sleeves and the top button on my shirt. Guess why?
