My backhoe on my Max 22 (NOT AN EMAX) moves from side to side (about a foot) when I'm driving around. It just feels loose. Could it be that there is air in the cylinder? If it's air, how do I bleed it out? It didn't do this when it was new. Also when using the hoe, it seems to want to slowly drift to the left.

Can you push it back and forth by hand? Possible bad port relief valve.

Not sure what model BH you have. some have only one cylinder others two. If you have a single cylinder are the mounting pins ok and in place ? Possible cylinder piston nut has come loose or off. Same with duel cylinder set up but with one failed cylinder. What model BH so I can be more specific?

It's single piston and I'll check all that stuff when I get home in a few days. Thanks.

You should be able to bleed by extending and retracting the cylinders in and out a few times.. also check fluid level and check for leaks while your doing this. Can you see the cylinder ram is moving in and out and its not got play at the mounting?

the drifting can be from a lever out of adjustment

Sorry for the delay but I just got time to look at it.

The play is in the piston. All the mounting points are tight. If I operate it form stop to stop (left and right), the play goes away but comes back again if I don't use the backhoe while running the tractor.

Fluid is full.

Sounds like you are describing a bad port relief. Is the swing weaker in one direction than the other? Still also could be loose piston nut.

That's what I was thinking. The internals of the cylinder should have no movement. Air stuck in there could have the same symptom. but I would do two things if cycling it did not rid the problem.

1. Crack the hydraulic line on that side of the cylinder that is experiencing the movement and see if any air comes out. Hold the control valve to the full extend or retract (but don't cycle it or you will suck air in). Tighten the line and crack the other line of the cylinder. Repeat this for both the extend and retract side of the cylinder until no more air comes out.

2. Remove both the extend and retract hoses from the cylinder while still attached. Manually swing the backhoe back and forth (catch the fluid as it comes out) and feel for irregular movement in the piston. If you do, remove the cylinder for disassembly or replace.
