John Deere 2013-2015, 5E series brake problem?

Quick update on my new 5055E
Finally got to play with my new tractor this weekend. Mowed a small plot with my Woods BX84 mower and disced and planted 2 1/2 ac or foodplots. The brakes stop the tractor, but only after about 3 inches depression on peddles can you feel pressure or resistance to the step, or stomp as the situation requires. My lease is in very steep hills and rain had turned the clay roads very slick. After initial impressions of brake failure subsides it's more like my first impression on using anti-lock brakes when they first came out. The brakes on my tractor stop the tractor but are much less reactive than I was used to on my Kubotas.
Brakes became a minor issue after the nut securing the 3pt lift arm control vibrated off after 10 hrs on the meter. With a 40ft conned box headed my way for storage and 2 hrs to level the spot I was tied to the mower with no way to ready the spot. 3hrs and trip to town for parts later my storage is secure and the 3pt fixed but the box is on a hill but the box doors just do function. My next trip will be to check each and every nut and bolt I can reach to make sure nothing else works loose.

I also have a 2014 5055e open station tractor. I have the same issue with my brakes as most of you have described. Somewhere I read that they (JD) in an effort to A) help prolong the wear items and B) increase efficiency; installed some kind of spring to pull the pads all the way back away from the discs, so that they wouldn't drag, even slightly, and wear the pad prematurely and cause friction and consequently fuel burn. Personally, I feel that in a machine that generally isn't travelling that fast, that the wear/friction would be practically negligable.

When doing loader work I really wish that the binders would grab everytime I pressed the pedal. I'd like to hear what if anything JD has to say about it. It surely doesn't seem right.

The brakes are nothing to brag about, but mine do not go to floor. Dash lighs out, 4 wheel drive switch, two different seal leaks, 52 hours. I bet i get the brake issue soon. Im trying to swap it for a 5085m, if they dont give me a fair deal im going back to orange. I have lots of implements to buy still, glad im holding off.

No issues with my 5065E brakes... About 60 hours now. No other noticed issues.

Any updates on the soft brakes? I have a 5085e that you scares you every time you hit the brakes because it take so much pedal travel for them to react. Bought a new 6125M about a week ago and it's the same way. Push the pedal down all the way, then shove some more and it stops. I've gotten in the habit of doing a quick double tap on the pedal. On the larger Deere tractors I've got, 6140R, 7230R, 8285R, you just barely touch the brake pedal and they slide the wheels.

To the OP - Has JD done anything about your brakes? I have a 2012 5075E that has this issue and I posted about it in another thread here a couple of years ago. My warranty is out and I've just learned to live with it. I think that after putting 300 hours on the tractor it might be just a little better now. Here's a video from a few months after I bought it:

It sure looks like this is something JD could have fixed by now. Good luck to everyone dealing with this.

Coosa,

Your video is a good depiction of the issue.

I stopped posting my story on here a while back since my dealer's general manager, his service technician and a representative from John Deere came out together and finally got my brakes to work slightly better than they had been. They offered to buy the tractor back as an alternative but would not replace it. I told them I would keep it if they extended my warranty so Deere extended the 24 month warranty to 36 months. At this point, I'm used to the way the brakes function but still do not believe they work correctly or safely. My insurance agent has assured me I'm covered no matter what, even though I'm aware of the problem.
My latest problem with this tractor is that the three-point-hitch drops about an inch every 10 seconds and comes back up abruptly, rocking the tractor. The dealer sent their man out to check it but the problem wasn't occurring that day... I made a video of it on another day and the dealer service manager said there's a D-Tac notice about the issue. He left the dealer recently so I don't yet know how this issue will be handled...

Loudon, thanks for the reply, and I hope you can get the 3 pt hitch problem fixed. Mine started gradually slipping down a few months ago, but it didn't come back up. The friction control on the levers just needed to be tightened up and that fixed it. I thought it was strange that I had to adjust that after a little over 2 years of use. I ran my 5210 for 13 years and never once had to adjust it.

It sounds like I should have been harder on my dealer about fixing my brakes. Nobody ever offered to buy mine back or extend the warranty. I sent that video to my dealer's service manager and he sent it to a higher up at JD; their response was that it was "in specs". I wonder if I could sell that video to Kubota? :)
