They were still using steam engines in this part of the country when I was a kid in the 50's. My Dad ran a sand plant and we lived near by. I can still recall the sound the old engines made when they broke traction under a heavy load. I could sleep through all of the switching and such, but I always woke up when they broke traction.

You are correct, but if memory is correct the Army turned them loose as they did not work out very well.

A little more on trains.
Traction engines were only used on narrow gauge R/R'S. How narrow did the narrow gauge R/R get??
Modern diesel electric works on a similar principle. Brand name think "Shay".

steel wheels on steel rails does not provide very good traction. Gets worse if wet in ice conditions.

What did trains do to help over come the friction problem????

The geared locos were used mostly on narrow gauage logging RRs due to the steep grades.

Locos carried a tank of sand with nozzles pointed at the tracks just ahead of the driving wheels.

Maybe it has been posted but how many gallons of water does one inch of rainfall produce over one acre?

It will take a "Beautiful Mind" to quote that from memory. I had NEVER heard that figure quoted, so I had to look it up. I suppose you could convert one acre-inch of snow, in gallons to an acre-inch of water. :D

The sand box was usually located on the top of the boiler to facilitate easy loading and keep it from freezing.

We have a winner.

Isn't that an astounding number? ONE inch of rain is 27,154 gallons per acre. No wonder my garden likes natural rainfall so much. It's just a whole bunch more.

How did the "monkey wrench" get it's name?
