Today, the drivers on my highway hit and killed my dear wifes little ****zu, Baxter. She is very very sad. This is the second time in about three years. The posted speed limit is 55 Mph. The shift workers at the pressure treating plant a mile up the road tear down this highway at 100 mph at 5:30 PM. No police enforcement is why. Tempted to cut the highway with a backhoe, but that would get somebody killed and myself imprisoned.
I feel so frustrated and angry becoz there aint nothing I can do. Wife refuses to allow me to put the dog fence collar on her dog, says it is cruel...

Geez guys, it is too late now. but I will not get her another dog with these riff raff driving so fast out past my driveway on a rural highway and not much police presence hereabouts. I am so sad for my wife's sake.:pullinghair:

Sorry for your loss.... and don't mean to be cruel. But explain to your wife that animals get killed every day on our roads, and that the person hitting it could have been injured trying some last minute maneuver to try not to hit it. She should be proactive, keep the dog chained up, electric perimeter fence, kennel area, carry it around, etc, her choice of protection... If she really loves her pets, then she has to work at keeping them safe. Sorry again....

Why can you not control the dog ?

It really does not care if there are rules and restrictions. All dogs are able to live within rules and restrictions. You don't go running out on the highway do you?

Training a dog is much less difficult than grieving their loss.

Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for your very kind message. I hear you, but my wife does not listen.... until it is too late. That is a trait in her that makes me even more angry about the dog's death.. and it was the second time it has happened:mur:

Maybe, if I told my wife not to go on the highway... She might ignore me??

I'm with Cal. My two dogs DO NOT go out on the hiway.

And as Jerry said, was the driver supposed to wreck to avoid the dog??

Sorry for your loss. Please do not be one of those citizens that calls the police to complain about something like this. It's the dog's fault.

Again, sorry for your loss.

There were two threads with the same title, so I merged them into one.

On the subject, sorry for your wife's loss.

Dog was off your property on a highway. Even going 55 its sometimes hard to see an animal the size of a small dog. I've hit several large raccoons, possums, etc... that were larger than small dogs. Didn't see them until it was too late. Couldn't swerve into oncoming lanes and too late to brake. I imagine if someone swerved to avoid a loose dog and did damage to their car they might be able to come back at the dog owner for damages. Train the dog. Get a fence, etc... especially since this is the 2nd time its happened. While its not completely preventable, you can significantly reduce the chances of it happening. Again, sorry for your dog. :(

No, It is not the dog's fault.. It is my wife's fault, She would not train the dog or restrain the dog and even tough I put in anundergroiunhd dog fence, she would not allow the collar to be put on the dog... Now she feels responsible...and she IS to blame...because she IS NOT RESPONSIBLE.
I have a big dog A golden doodle who has been collar trained. He has learned the safety zone TWO Acres and stays within it always, but I put the collar on him anyways.. My wife thought it unnecessary..but now she sees that is. Hard lesson for a hard headed woman.

I know the heartbreak of losing one's pet. Perhaps that is why I can be so hard.

I lost a very good dog to intentional poisoning. I know who set it out, and it wasn't even my dog doing the roaming. The neighbors dog raided the garage and brought the peanut butter jar laced with rat poison into our yard. Since that loss "My Dog", does not eat from anything that is not " in the bowl".
Training treats from my hand are OK on permission with the command "Take it". It is a matter of training, and returns some peace of mind.

It takes extra effort, but it's worth it.

Jix With your last post, Perhaps you could steer your wife's love for her pets into a "training" for both her and the replacement.

Look into dog agility for the kinds of rewards that come from a well trained animal (though I have no real interest in dog agility, it is inspiring to see what they do, and how happy they appear to be doing it!

It sounds like you just want to vent... Better here than at your wife. ;)

Just another member of the choir... Perhaps when she starts talking about another dog she also will be open to suggestions to keep him safe.

I am truly sorry for your loss. We have seen a number of animals killed on the road adjacent to our home, and it is always very sad.

As some have stated, pet owners need to secure their animals. This, by the way, does NOT mean on a chain! Owners that love their pets will provide a fenced yard, or other area containment solution.

Having said that ... there are an endless supply of uncaring and ignorant morons that make no attempt whatsoever to avoid hitting an animal. No, I'm not suggesting they swerve into oncoming traffic. Just hitting the brakes would be a nice gesture. Animals in the road are not at fault! I would just ask everyone to consider that every life is precious.

Real life, dog in the road, dead dog. Don't whine about that. Build a fence or don't do dogs

Motorbike riders like me HATE dogs running loose on the roadways. Not because they chase us, we can easily outrun them. Because they sometimes run right out in front of us. In those cases the dog does not always come out on the short end of the stick.

This is very helpful. I appreciate you sympathy.. NOT:talktothehand: GFY..

I dont know why youre getting so defensive here. You should save that attitude for your wife and maybe you'd still have dog #2.

Best answer is to keep the darn dog off the road, either by training, fencing, or keeping it inside.

A good point was raised about someone swerving to miss it, what if they went off the road in the process? Failure to control your pet could leave
you liable, let alone being responsible for the dog roaming to other properties where there could be kids outside etc..

As a long time dog owner, its MY responsibility to control my pet, not drivers responsibility to avoid it. Anything that happens to my pets lies on my shoulders.
