I have a John Deere 272 finish mower which I use with a Kioti CK30 tractor. The only purpose is to keep my 5 acre lot cut. I have planted field grass and mow the field about once a month. The mower's blades have been sharpened regularly. The mower really does a poor job of cutting. I originally thought I would get a brush hog but decided the finish mower would leave a better looking cut. Any one have experience with this mower and any suggestions on improving the look of the cut?

Thanks.

Poor as in what?
What are you trying to cut?
Are you running your tractor up at PTO speed?

The mower leaves intermittent grass uncut. The cut is not smooth at all. The grass is field grass planted two years ago. I run the tractor at full PTO speed.

Thanks.

If you slow way down does it cut better?

If so (if it doesn't have them already) I'd consider a higher suction blade.

It cuts a little better but not a lot better.

How tall is the grass when you cut it? What height are you cutting the grass to?

With a finish mower you are going to have to mow more than once a month to get a smooth cut.

Thanks but I have mowed when grass is only 6 inches and it still does a poor job.

Usually my grass is about 8'' to a foot. I'm cutting to the lowest setting on the mower. (I have experimented with raising the wheel setting, even to the highest setting).

Does your 272 have 4 gauge wheels or just 2 on the back? If just 2 in back be sure the mower is level, and the front lip isn't dragging the ground.

I suppose you've checked to make sure the belts are properly adjusted so they don't slip? Also, do you cut in the mornings when there's a lot of dew on the grass, or later in the day when it's usually drier? Is it leaving big clumps of cut grass as you mow?

My mower deck will leave a lot of bahia stems sticking up if they are 12" tall to begin with. The bermuda grass cuts great if it is not dried out.

Have you tried mowing "normal" height grass with it? Is it uneven then also? That would tell you if its the mower or if it's the tall grass that's the problem.

I know you said you've tried cutting 6" tall grass but that's pretty tall still for a finish mower imo.
