Sounds like a passionate argument for a vegetarian diet. Did you come away with pointers to any specifics? Foods to avoid, recommended daily intakes, etc.?

And where does cactus beer fit into such a diet? :D:laughing:

First lets talk wine. They had a DR who actually did research for the healthiest wine and the results of the research: Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
The healthiest were these de-alcholinized. (but what fun is that) On a discussion on how much - It was said that a glass or so a week was ok but 3 a night no way.
Beer- no mention at this conference but others conference had mentions one very now and then is ok 4 a night not so. (I still have 4 cactus beers left from the six-pac I bought 8 days ago.)

It is not a "Vegetarian" or even a "Vegan" Diet, both of which contain many unhealthy foods such as processed foods and sugar and etc. . . . . You could call yourself a Vegan and live off doughnuts and french fries.

This is a LOW FAT, WHOLE FOODS, PLANT-BASED DIET.

One of the Cardiologist gives his patients this brochure which describes it very well.
http://mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org/ncal/Images/New Plant Based Booklet 1214_tcm28-781815.pdf

Some of the Doctors are even more strict on the food - especially if the patient is serious and wants to forgo an operation (bypass or stent). - They discussed many of their patients who were serious and improved and no longer needed the operation. You could tell the Doctors were not unhappily about the lack of money but shared the true
enthusiasm of the patients cured disease without surgery.

All of the Doctors thought is was a disgrace that the educational universities do not include nutrition in their medical curriculum. There was actually some medical students there that were going to start a petition that nutrition should be added - they felt there was a big gap in their education - and they were paying a lot for it. It gave me hope for the next generation.

They realize that there is not enough Obama care money to continue the expensive treatment of the symptoms when there is a simple but hard alternative.

same could be said for cigarette smoking and the problem is even with knowledge, people do what they do...

Exactly and that was the longest discussion among the doctors. How to change unhealthy human behavior to healthy human behavior. There lies the key that can save this county billions of health care dollars. Like they said - a patient who sees the nicotine stain fingers of their doctor will probably not quite smoking. It begins with them.

All the meals served at this conference were low fat, whole food, plant based.

Not every question on behavior could be answer but there was a lot of corroboration going on between the experts there which gave me hope.
There were some suggestion thrown around that sounded pretty good.

My suggestion, which I did not mention was to get Meghan Trainer to change the words in her song " It's all about the Bass, no treble" to "It's all about the food, no meds".

TxDon...what about olive oil and oils from nuts?

Research by one Dr there showed the health benefits of olive oil double the health benefits of tomatoes. But on the other hand it narrowed (like a slow restriction) the size of the arteries for several hours which caused angina. So the overall the consensus was no oil. The research on it was presented and quite convincing - I do not add any types of oils - and don't miss the extra calories.

I don't remember nut oil being specifically discussed.

Oh by the way, protein diets were discussed and the overwhelming consensus were that they were harmful to the patient with research showing a 22% increase of mortality.
They said they were effective short term in loosing weight and when weight is lost, no matter which diet, cholesterol levels decrease, during the weight loss. Do not expect the cholesterol levels to stay low once the weight stops falling off.

We have been fixated on calories so long instead of good nutrition.
The food pyramid was not very helpful.

I now cook only with olive oil. My heart has never had an issue, even after multiple
stress tests required to stay on Celebrex for my arthritis.
And I eat nuts, mostly unsalted almonds.
I call these quality calories...because I hardly ever eat chips or much processed food at all.
But am I going to avoid a Supreme pizza because it has some unidentified mystery meat in it?
Probably not.
But I know it can't be very often.
It just can't, nor can I eat at the local greasy spoon very often.
Life is all about balance, and we are what we eat. To some degree.

And it simply makes utterly good sense to eat green vegetables.
Equally good sense, but less often, to eat a ground chuck hamburger.
You need protein and not everyone likes beans...or their effects.

btw, my cholesterol numbers are mid 100's. No one in my family had heart problems. They all died of
cancer, as likely will I. The trick is what to eat to avoid that...and dementia.
If we could eat our way away from those two, we'd be driving our tractors in our 90's...
I'm up for that. I wonder if any member of TBN is over a hundred years old.

TxDon, thanks for dinging the wake up bell.

Now if only beer had serious medicinal qualities...;)

Think of yourself as a diesel engine and those bad foods are full of water.
sooner or later you are not going to run well, or at all...

My thoughts were. Ain't that cute. :).

I saw one of those too. Looked sort of like a big electric wheelchair with a mower,
probably could be used as what, a personal mobility vehicle for going somewhere.
I don't think it would hold up well to many trips through the chicken houses...
although, if they take our keys away from us when we get too old, maybe we can still drive
one of these...

Don, was there any mention of statins?

I thought they were supposed to take care of the cholesterol problem.:confused3:

I have checked every calendar in the house, every phone, every computer, turned on the tv. Yep they all agree it's June 1.
.13 inches of rain last night another line moving in in about an hour. Have a load of cattle to haul this morning then back to work in chicken coops.

Round here 1st June is called Gypsy Day. Sharemilking contracts usually start/end 1 June and those moving to a new contract/farm are on the road. Sharemilkers with their own herd and not moving far frequently drive(drove ?) their cattle on the back roads so if you're out and about you have to be aware that some roads may be just a little slippery.

Had some good thunderstorms last night, and a bit of heavy rain tonight. We needed the rain, now they have flash flood watches.

Do you ever wonder why The drug companies, that make the statins, have the Doctors make their patients fast before their cholesterol test. There lies your answer.

They only work on the cholesterol the body makes. Don't get a test after poor nutritious meal - it can easily get up to 400 and gradually goes down after 4 hours just in time for that dinner meal. But lets not get hung up on just cholesterol. Nutrition has multiple and different effects on the arteries and the linings of the arteries that make them resistant (healthy nutrition) or susceptible (poor nutrition) to plaque. . There was so much detail discussed I can't go into it here, this is the good morning thread!

One more new thing I found out about plaque, like a cancer tumor it has blood vessels which feed the plaque cells for growth. Starve the cells stop the plaque buildup. Proper nutrition can switch the growing of the cells on or off.

It was firehouse chore night. Run tested four chainsaws, sharpened one chain and sucked up some dead flies with the shop vac.

It has sprinkled and misted here all day. Not a lot of rain but it all soaks in.

Don't think I've ever heard of share milkers that own their herd but pasture on someone else's land? Do they have portable milking equipment or it that supplied by the land owner?

The land owner has the milking equipment and yards. "Generally" the farmer hires shed hand who builds up to become sharemilker. The sharemilker then gradually gets up his own herd and works them until he can buy his own farm. After a few years he hires a shed hand........

52F and cloudy @ 22:45 ... was a rather chilly day today ... ran the WBF for what is likely the last time until fall and got rid of all the wood out back, save for a small amount that will be easy to load up and take to the wood pile.

Laundry room clean up is finished.

Made a run to Best Buy to drop off an old TV for recycling, picked up the string trimmer on the way there.

Waterbed sprung a leak ... have to run by and pick up a new tube tomorrow.

Tomorrow is supposed to be nice - no rain, sunny in the afternoon, and a high of 72F.

Finally ...

RS, I'd forgotten about my other Stihl buggaboo: No access to repair or maintenance documentation. Clearly it's Stihl's intent to keep all that work in the dealer's hands.
Yeah ... that pretty much sucks ... :(

My dealer was kind enough to provide me with print outs of the carb, which I used to find my assembly error, and the prints came without asking when he plunked the parts on the counter.
Nice

But there's nothing available to download from Stihl's web site other than owner's manuals, and they only cover things like replacing recoil starter cords, spark plugs, and cleaning air filters.
Right

BMW and a lot of other auto firms just lost a big lawsuit for trying to do the same thing, so maybe the situation will improve.
Hopefully so ...

I've managed to locate what appears to be a somewhat universal fuel pipe/grommet assembly for the brushcutter that some aftermarket supplier evidently makes. Fits a number of brands including Stihl.

Also found several sources for new carbs ... best is about $20 cheaper than the dealer ... but if I end up deciding to replace the carb, I'll probably go ahead and order it from the dealer ... since they didn't charge me anything for the tear down/diagnosis ...

Also have noticed the amount of trash generated here is a lot less now that the work is done on the house. I've already down sized the trash can, saving a whopping $6 every two months on the trash service fee.
With no kids at home, we're down to usually a single can once per week. The second can only gets filled when I clean up the shop or do some cleaning project at the house.

Even though I recycle containers, many of the recyclers out here no longer accept plastic unless it's subject to CRV (bottle deposit). It seems that the recycle waste streams are full to overflowing, and it's not being used in products fast enough to keep up with what's available.
It's a shame plastic isn't being recycled more than it is.

Good evening all/ Cool temps today cloudy, drizzle most of the day. Most of the hose is packed, loading starts tomorrow. Not having a basement also cuts down on how much you can accumulate :) . Then the trek to Texas starts. Had to change closing to Texas for the TX house.

Never heard of sharemilkers either. Interesting cycle there.

I didn't come across any wondering herds of cows but I did get behind a horse and buggy. He was doing pretty good for a single horse. Pulling hills at about 15 mph. With two men inside on wet pavement.

Stockyard was packed. Very few empty pens. I will be able to look tomorrow and get an exact number of head sold but I would guess it was over 1500 head. A low week at this stockyard is about 1100 head and a high is usually over 1700 head. With no sale last week it usually makes for a larger sale.

Someone keeps sending us over the Atlantic unusually cold and windy weather for this time of year.
It was gusting in the high 40's mph all yesterday afternoon and into the night and set to blow at 50 mph plus today.

Txdon : You obviously had an exciting weekend, how did you manage to get into that event ?
By last year I had heard enough convincing arguments about processed foods to be persuaded to cut them out of our regular diet. Red meat has for years now been only an occasional treat, a bit ironic given that I spend time every day helping to produce it for others to eat. From what I have read, providing you do eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, fish and chicken do not seem to have any significant adverse impacts on health, as long as you are not eating them deep fried. I'm sure farmer2009 will have a market for his chickens for many years to come, not so sure on the market for sheep.

47 and dripping wet. It could clear up anytime now as far as I'm concerned.
