Fencing for goats?

I've always heard that if your wire fence won't keep water in, then it won't keep goats in, either. :)

Where do you put the electric wire? Near the ground?

I would put two or three. One on the top to keep them laying on the top forcing it down one a few feet up trying to keep them away.

We have both Kiko's and Tennessee Fainters, and I have never had luck with electric fencing. Because we have horses ( Mini's & Haflingers) as well, we just use the Goat Fence. It is 4x4 instead of the standard 6x6, and either stretch it across our gates as well or use goat gates. Posts are 10 foot spread. If you don't want a dog in with them, consider a miniature donkey, coyotes don't stand a chance and they are cute and lovable too

With woven wire fence we put a "hot" wire at around 30" or so. This is shoulder high on most goats. Why???? If one doesn't do this the goats use the fence to rub their old coats/fur off and just to scratch themselves. What results is a fence line that is badly warped and stretched from a 250lb to 450lb critter rubbing up against it.............. Some folks put a wire at maybe 6" or so to keep burrowing critters out........... Never had this problem yet...........

NO goats do NOT climb up on the top wire. We have brush and trees on the other side of the pastures for the goats to stand on their hind legs to get at........NEVER have seen one leaning against the fence to get at it........... We use welded wire in our paddocks around the barns. Don't see them climbing on or standing against them either. Seems to me that a lot of folks telling of their goat "experience" are getting most of it down at the barber shop...........

Besides goats we also have mules that we trail ride with........... Often we use one electric wire to make a temporary fence line in areas of our woods where we want the "brush" cleaned out.......... Perhaps we are just blessed.... well, no perhaps about that, as HE is truly taking care of us...... but, our mules stay put for weeks at a time with one wire. Often we don't even make it "HOT". Of course, some folks might say that mules are a bit smarter than the typical horse or mini........... Just my humble; but knowledgeable, based upon experience, opinions........... God bless.........Dennis
