G'day and :welcome: sounds like the starter is ok but it may be a bad safety switch not sure what is on those but maybe clutch, seat and pto are places to look.

More like a sticky starter solenoid.

Very interesting I have John Deere come out and the replaced the battery connectors worked for a bit like two starts then noting. So I called them again and they said I needed a new battery. so I did that. It started again but again I turn the key light turn on I here a click and noting. When I turn key and touch the starter with screw driver it starts and the PTO light turns on and no PTO is on. ?

I'm with Leejohn on this one. If the solenoid doesn't "click" till you whack it, it could be sticking.
If it does click but doesn't start till you whack it, it still could be the solenoid contacts, or maybe the starter brushes or bushings.
A 12v test light can tell you if you are getting power to the solenoid and if the solenoid is conducting.

I'm with heviduty on this one. Have you tested to see if you get power at the small solenoid wire when you turn key to start? May have a faulty ign switch or wire between.

heviduty thank you all for your response. how do you do 12v test.
Solenoids are usually piggybacked on the starter. They usually have a large wire and a small wire connected to them.
To check with 12v test light:

1)Connect the clip lead of your test light to a good ground.
Does the test light glow when you touch its probe to the starter terminal the large wire is connected to?
Yes: Continue with 2)
))No: Does the light glow when you touch the probe to the positive terminal of the battery?
))Yes: Check for loose connection at battery and starter.
))No: Check battery and battery neg. to ground connection.

2)Touch the probe to the small wire. Does the test light glow when the key switch is turned to the start position?
))Yes: The problem is the starter/solenoid. Some solenoids can be disassembled. If yours can, try cleaning the contacts.
))No: Problem is ahead of starter/solenoid. Check pto switch, neutral switch, clutch switch...

There's not much else you can do without access to a schematic.

Does it spin over and not fire or not spin over? If it spins but doesn't fire unless you short out the starter, then your thermister is gone on the fuel solenoid. Most times it doesnt matter, especially when warm, but it is worse when cold. If you short out the starter you are bypassing the thermister so the solenoid gets full voltage...

That mysterious JD starting problem!

I have a JD4200 that has an intermitent start problem. I've yet to come up with a positive problem/solution.

What has worked is pumping the primer pump prior to trying to start. Boosting in conjunction with the previous. These two seem to work the best along with a heat gun on the solenoid.

I've also gone for a Brew or two or more while the problem is contemplated. This has worked. Slapping the cowl and jiggling fuses and relays has also worked.

The latest success has a tarp over the tractor when sitting. It does reside out in the elements.

It's frustrating. ( new solenoid, old one was good. Manual indicted a thermistor. Can't find it. Parts guy say's it doesn't have one. The battery is good)

Ign switch is what the key fits into. My guess is a problem with the neutral start switch. What type trans does your tractor have as different trans have different switch locations?

Check out this link, it will show you what and where the thermistor is.

I just went through a similar problem. My Kubota sits outside too. My key switch itself was the problem. I sprayed WD-40 in it and worked the key on and off multiple times. Mine started working again.
