A nice fire pit.

How long would this tank have to sit before you could cut it ?

Would you fill it with water, then empty, let dry then cut ?

Had my local propane vendor come and pump out a 50 year old 1,000 gallon tank today that is no longer legal to fill. Lucky it was the type tank with a pipe to the liquid in the bottom as there was 700 gallons still left and I get credit for the propane. Lifted the tank into their trailer with no problems using the NH T 4.75. :)

Why is it illegal to fill?

Too old maybe. He said it was 50 years old. Too old to be inspected, out of date safety wise, just guessing 😎

They do make very good fire pits you get two from each tank. Cut the ends off and have fun designing. They sell for $900.00 plus each.

Man I wish I was close. They make the best smoker. You stand them on end and cut a door or several doors in the side and lots of racks with the fire box in the bottom. I ran across a design to have a motorized rotating rack in one.

They go very quickly around here.

I have a smaller one, like that smoker tank. It had been "donated" to the hunt camp by a member, then the local supplier refused to fill it. I took it home and found that it still had liquid propane in it so I hooked it up to our maple syrup finishing burner. Lasted two years....
I have since unbolted and pulled all the valves and fittings from it, filled it with water, dumped it and maybe this summer I will cut it.../

Up here they take the 100lb propane cylinders, crack them open to air out. Then they shoot a hole through them and take them to the scrap yard.

Was that tank above or underground? If the latter, it sure looks pretty clean.

Fifty years ago I don't think contractors routinely attached sacrificial anodes when they installed underground steel tanks. It's a common practice now. Without one, galvanic corrosion eventually thins the metal and causes pinholes that make the tank unsafe to fill. Maybe that's what happened with your tank.

Around here, the Amish use them for compressed air tanks, to run their air powered well pumps, and other things. A 1,000 gal. tank of air will last them about a week. And those pumps will scare the bejesus out of you, if you've never heard one, and not expecting it to kick on. But not nearly as bad as the old air start Macks & Freightliners..!!
