My 3016 steering locks under load even with as little as 200lbs on the loader. It locks in either direction if the tractor isn't moving doesn't even try to move until I move the tractor. The dealer came and took it for a few days they replaced the steering motor saying it was defective and the locking in the steering is normal for the mahindra. The dealer got angry when I approached them again about this said he was contacting the regional rep. It only has 20 hrs. Question is, does anybody else have this problem?

No I have not once seen this happen.

So your saying even with the engine RPMs up it will not turn the tires with a small load on the loader?

Locks as in you can hear the pump trying to turn the tires and cant or just wont do anything

Texar, that is not normal on the 3016. Test this at a dealers lot; put a load into the bucket of a new 3016 and see if the power-steering works. It will work. We do see this issue on some of the 10 series (now the 2500 series) with a loaded bucket if the surface is such that the tires are really gripping. And on those, it is just the nature of the beast. They put big tires on the front of some of these tractors, bigger I suspect than the "power steering engineer" anticipated. Move the tractor a 1/2" and the steering works fine. The dealer may be thinking about those models. But I've never seen that issue on a Mitsu built 15/16 series. If the dealer replaced the steering motor, that leaves the following possibilities: 1) Low hydraulic pressure. 2) Steering hydraulic cylinder bypassing some oil, causing it to be weak. 3) Some sort of binding in the knuckles causing hard steering. Of these three, #1 is easy to test. #3 is super unlikely. #2 would be my guess. Perhaps when the cylinder was manufactured the ring on the piston got scuffed and now has a gouge in it.

Those are my guesses, please let us know.

I would think its by passing as well.. if all fluid levels are good. How many hours on the tractor?

How long has it taken to get those 20 hours?

It has done it from the beginning. First time it went back to the dealer it had less than 10hrs on it. They replaced the steering motor said they had a bad batch. I've had the tractor since the end of Oct. They also put water in the tires and aired them up I know it sounds funny BUT if it was getting to much grip I can understand how this would affect it it has R4 tires 4wd. The fluid is good and it doesn't squeal or make any abnormal sound while acting this way just doesn't turn unless I move the tractor. I feel like it's the steering cylinder as mentioned earlier or possibly bypassing or messing up in some type of valving in the steering motor.

Texar, I assume they only loaded the rear tires? It's not recommended to load the fronts....although I'm not saying that would cause this issue.

Daves Tractor.yes they only loaded the rear. The dealer told me this morning that it will be a couple of weeks until the area service rep can look at it. Told him i noticed it was also a little jerry while still on smooth shop floor without a load and not really smooth while driving straight on my drive. I know R4 tires can cause vibration but that's not it. Thanks for replying

just a thought but have you tried changing the hyd. filter

I haven't changed the filter trying to get the dealer to fix the issue since it's done it virtually from day one. BUT now that you brought this up wouldn't, if it is the filter, affect all of the hydraulics? Thanks

It should but you never know. I would have done that first either way. Why don't you just take the cyl. off and have it tested

Didn't think to test the cylinder. If the dealer doesn't find what it is I'll try that. I don't really want to touch anything yet since it's supposed to be under warranty so he won't be able to say I did this.

I have the same tractor, if I use my bucket pallet forks, then load that with split firewood stacked on a pallet 4 ft high with wood and move that into the garage it will Max out the steering system. I try not to turn it unless I am moving. I figured it was a lot of friction on that cement so I haven't worried about it.

I would call that normal, probably no problem with that. That is a nice way to handle firewood.

My r4 tires are beet juice filled then I have a Tractor Supply box blade on the back. I have about an inch clearance under my garage door so when I have the wood on the front I have to lower it and push it to keep the ROPS low enough to get through.
