Assuming this transaction does come to pass, I'll be trading the 4400. I paid $13,000 for it (came with an 84" RFM too, BTW) four years ago. The trade-in value is $11600...not much loss. It's a great tractor and I never really expected to replace it...but this cold weather in VT is beating me to death. I think it was Nietzsche who said "That which does not kill us makes us stronger". I must be getting pretty **** strong! The doors and windows come off too, for warmer weather use...that will be nice. You know, when I bought my first tractor, a Deere 670 (15 years ago), my wife commented "Oh boy! It's got a bucket...easier to bury you" (speaking to me). Of course, I smugly thought "heck, can't dig with a loader!" Well, this one has a 448 backhoe....hmmm, might be a problem...

Good morning. I think its about 34F. The airport's weather data has not been showing up on wundermap the last few days. Hummm. Who do I call about that? Wifey making coffee. Always tastes better when she makes it. Going over the rivers and thru the woods to the kids grandmother today. (My mom lives down in Victoria Tx.) Going to pay my property taxes next week. Arghhhhh. While I'm not a senior citizen yet, I think they should give elderly a large break on property taxes. Maybe $60,000 exemption. If their home is worth 60K or less they pay nothing. Now, they get nothing but the 12K homestead exemption here in Texas. That way, the truly poor would get a break while the wealthy living in a mansion would still have to pay. Just my random thought for the day.

Partially agree with you. Actually, we do get an age exemption here.

That said, I believe the property tax system is ****ed up. Property taxes pay for the municipal services. Does a $500k property with 2 residents really use 3x the services of a $150k property with 4 residents? Just one of my pet peeves.

Our property taxes are not too bad. But everything but the house and one acre is rated as farm or timber land. I don't like that we are paying for the schools, and don't have any kids. There is a saying for the folks who are filling up the Sand Hills to the west end of Calhoun County. They come down here with a white shirt and a twenty dollar bill, and never change either of them. We do have a lot of folks with five or six kids living in a trailer on a quarter acre. They don't pay any property tax at all, but use all the government services.

sun came out here. The snow storm was a dud as storms go, all hype, no snow. We got maybe an inch with some freezing sleet, but overall not bad, not the 2-4" the were calling for. Monday morning we get to do it again.

Roy, are you missing Dillsburg yet with those temps up there? Any day you get a new tractor is a good day, congrats.

I use my backhoe more that I figured I would. 59 hrs out of 154 total so far on the tractor using the backhoe. I put my tractor log in a spreadsheet, and have it marked as backhoe, loader work, move pellets, mowing, and snow removal.

And if the Poor don't like the rich why do they always try to make us poor?? I just paid over 6k of which 5.25 of that goes to the schools. I too don't have kids. Property taxes should not be supporting the schools.

Larro, I looked up your county, and is it right that it has 14K residents? If that is right, wow. My HS had 4k in 3 grades.

A lot of folks feel that way, but a lot of folks always have. We had a guy here in Bath, Michigan, who blew up a school and killed a bunch of folks over that - in 1922. I don't know the answer, but I haven't heard of anybody volunteering to take up the slack...

Silly question Murph. If the rich have all the money, where else would you look for it?

Joking aside though, education takes a major bite of property taxes about everywhere I suspect. There are things that could be cut, but someone will always scream. Some states do more than others to take the burden off retirees. Maine is not one of them. :laughing:
