How Is JD 2440 2WD with FEL?

My 2440 does not have a FEL but it sure would be handy to have one on it.

Without power steering, how practical is a FEL on a 2440?

Another thing to consider; does it have the swept back front axle? Front tire size/capacity? My JD203 HAS power steering, the optional straight HD front axle and bigger front tires. It would be a handful without power steering. There have been times I have had to use the rear wheel brakes to steer. I would want power steering.

I had a 2355 2wd with FEL for a good while. About the same size and horse power.

You run out of traction real quick moving materials (big load of gravel or what not). So a lot of counterweight is needed.

Long snout and you sit down kind of low in those anyway it wasn't real easy to see over and was hard to move around in tight spots.

I would not want one on it without power steering, it would be a bear to wrassle.

Moving round bales or something it does good.

Are you positive your 2440 doesn't have power steering? I didn't locate any manual steering parts in 2440 parts catalog and thought 2440 was only offered with power steering option.

Let's put it this way... If your tractor has a synchro tranny (or Hi/Lo) and is plumbed with a take-off valve for joystick use - I'll be right outside with my truck and trailer!!

Oh yes, would prefer 2 rear SCV's, too. While I'm wishin' for another good horse... Does it have the flat, row crop fenders with rack and pinion axles? Sheesh... I'm gonna have to sit down for a minute!

I have a 2wd 2240 with FEL and it handles it like a champ. I only have a 5' bucket though but I think a 6' would be no problem as I've never come close to getting the back tires off the ground. I never move hay with it, I save the heavy lifting for my 5093e. Very maneuverable in tight spots also. Lots better than my MFWD 5093e as far as that goes. I'm surprised to learn it doesn't have power steering. I thought all those 40 series had it.

Good thing the 2030 is out of site. It has HI-LO trans, already has independent mid=joystick controlled valve plumbed in, two rear SCVs, HD front axle, but no row crop fenders, just the clam shells and power adjust flanged wheels, not rack and pinion. Plus a JD 245SL loader.

I think FinallyGreen made an incorrect statement when he stated the 2440 had no PS.

I've been casting sidelong glances at the 30 series, too! Hah, ha. Sounds like a pretty sweet setup on your 2030. Hay buddy has a 245SL and i think it will outlift my 563MSL. Great loader. Really like the loader frame extending the full length of the tractor.

The frame size to power is a great mix on those tractors. I had borrowed the neighbors 2640 for a spell to get some of the heavy finish work done on a new hay field (rototilling and discing) and was surprised how handy that tractor was!

I could get into places that my 4000 series would be challenged to get into! And it would pull two, 4000 machines backwards! 'Course a guy can work on 'em and fix 'em, too!
