45F and cloudy @ 14:00 ...

Having a little coffee and trying to wake up before I head out into the chill. The idea of washing things off with water in the cold isn't terribly appealing.

Rs have you ever tried a product called Over Rust. You paint it on white and when it turns purple its dry. But it is suppose to encapsulate the rust and stop it. You put it on before you prime or paint. We use to use a couple gallons a year when I worked at the fertilizer plant.
Can't say that I have ...

I have tried a number of different "stop rust" or rust converter products over the years ... and have a few different ones up in the shop ... including some I've never even tried. Think most of them are probably based on phosphoric acid.

For the past ten or so years I've just mostly been using phosphoric acid to convert the rust to iron phosphate. Usually try to remove the heavy surface rust (needle scaler or wire wheel in a grinder) and then coat (or dip for the small stuff) it with phosphoric acid. Depending on various factors (temp/humidity/etc) this will often "dry" (convert) pretty quickly - turning mostly dark black or gray. Depending on how thick the rust layer is, it may not all convert (can still see some rust color showing thru) and I may do one or more additional coats - before it's really totally "dry".

It seems to work pretty well, in that stuff that I've done that hasn't been painted doesn't seem to be very inclined to rust ... at least in a somewhat protected environment (out of the weather)

RS, once you've converted, if you use epoxy primer and either epoxy or urethane paint, it will be extremely durable and look great as well.

Toppop,

Thanks for the info/recommendation ...

I've never used epoxy or urethane paint or primer myself but I've always heard that it was very durable and the primer was great on previously rusted areas.

The only gun I have at the moment is a small touch-up gun (my large gun got lifted in a burglary quite few years ago) ... which would probably handle these implements fine since they aren't all that big.

One concern I have though is the hardener - I have a decent quality Binks respirator ... but from what I understand a cartridge respirator isn't really recommended for isocyanate hardeners - and I don't have a fresh air mask/system.

If I was younger (and my lungs were better) I'd probably roll the dice and give it shot ... but at this stage in the game ...

BTW - congrats on your anniversary ... that's long time.

You two are to be commended for making it happen

44F and cloudy with misty rain @ 20:00

Was really dreading having to go outside this afternoon but once I got out there I was surprised at how warm it was ... didn't seem chilly at all ... I guess it being dry and a lack of wind made all the difference.

Got the PHD hooked up and the augers moved over to house to hose off/clean before it got dark out ... the tips which were in the ground have started rusting pretty good already. Will get them cleaned off and stowed away tomorrow.

Waiting on the cookies to come out of the oven and then back up to the shop to finish auger and PHD stands and other stuff.
