I'm looking at a old 4020 2wd, thinking it'd be good to pull a large bush hog mower. Not running right now, but looks pretty good, not all beat up and has good rubber. Wondering what $$ I should offer? Also is there anything to be concerned with? Just looking for the good & bad on this model. Thanks for any help...

It is the standard all tractors try to be. Fantastic tractor in it day, and that day has not yet ended 40+ years later. The gas ones are said to be thirsty. Diesel are very efficient. All parts seem to be available. As with any tractor purchase, check clutch operation, PTO, 3 pt, power steering, hydraulic operation. Tires are expensive, so factor condition into purchase price.

What to offer? Depends on all of the above.

One of the best Deere ever made. Price varies a good bit. They are very expensive to buy if they are in good shape. They bring more than when they where new.

Thanks for the info so far. Had a closer look after I started this thread. 5035 hrs showing on the meter, it is a diesel. It doesn't run, so hard to check everything. It was working a couple years ago in a neighbor's hay field, then started losing power, so it was left in the field. Might be as simple as a fuel problem, or? Oil seepage at the steering column & rear pto shaft, but motor & trany are fairly dry. Needs a seat, steering wheel, mostly for cosmetic reasons. I can fix most anything on it, but it might be more of a project than I want? Is a great looking old tractor though!

The bad thing about the 4020's is if you start doing a lot of repairs you get into it for more then it's worth really quick. The good side is once you have one that's running they are pretty reliable. If you're planning on doing this for a project and then try to sell later I'd pass. If you want to keep it then depends on the price. No more then $4500 is what I'd give. Parts are easy to come buy though. These tractors come up for sale a good bit in running condition and I'd just want to buy a running tractor then a non running one.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. Likely only get it if the price is too good to say no. Thanks!

Just be careful, it sat out in the field for "a couple" of years for a reason. And sometimes a "couple" is really 7 or so,,,, ever watch Judge Judy?

We hay with a 4020 with a powershift and its a sweet running older machine. Cast rims and loaded tires. Very heavy tractor. The pto is drifting and it smokes a little bit. very good on fuel to for that size tractor. The seat leaves a bit to be desired! make sure it has the weights on the front end or you will be shortly looking for them.

Yes, more than 2 years, but no more than 4. It was on my neighbors place, now on my property waiting on a trailor to come get it, but it'll likely be awhile.

It has the large front weight. I might ask if I can mess with it and see if I can get it running...

I owned a 4020 gas powershift about 20 years ago. It was a great tractor, but, as others have said it was bit "thirsty" even for utility work. But in some sense, the gas consumption issue was both a curse and a blessing. Pulling a 4020 gas hard would take up to about 8 gallons of gas per hour compared to probably 5 1/2 for the diesel. So it didn't take too long for the gas tractors to be pulled off the hard work and delegated to some less demanding tasks. Consequently, the 4020 gas tractors have much lower price on the used tractor market so they are easier to purchase. Of course, when you sell it, it doesn't bring nearly what the diesel tractor would.

If you look for used 4020 tractors, or a 4010, there aren't a lot of gas models to be found. The one I bought was in really nice shape and was priced about $3,000 less than a diesel with similar hours, condition, etc. Of course when I traded it I got less money than had it been a diesel.

As I looked around for tractors it also seemed that the gas tractors looked like they had lead a more "gentle" life than diesel tractors. If they were a loader tractor all of their life they could look rough but I think the high gasoline consumption put a lot of them performing work that required less of hard pull all day long.

I wouldn't hesitate to get another 4020 gas tractor. And with the powershift transmission you can't find a nicer tractor for utility work. Like any gasoline burning tractor of the day the carburetor condition is critical to the performance. I had some issues early on with my 4020 but actually ended up putting a new Zenith carburetor on replacing the original Marvel Schebler carburetor. It was a little rough running at cold start up but smoothed out quickly.

If someone is just looking for a 90 hp tractor for some general utility work with the occasional tillage use then the higher gasoline consumption shouldn't scare them away in my opinion. Just accept the fact that it won't be as easy to re-sell as a diesel and you have a little higher operating cost.
