I'm looking at a old 4020 2wd, thinking it'd be good to pull a large bush hog mower. Not running right now, but looks pretty good, not all beat up and has good rubber. Wondering what $$ I should offer? Also is there anything to be concerned with? Just looking for the good & bad on this model. Thanks for any help...

It is the standard all tractors try to be. Fantastic tractor in it day, and that day has not yet ended 40+ years later. The gas ones are said to be thirsty. Diesel are very efficient. All parts seem to be available. As with any tractor purchase, check clutch operation, PTO, 3 pt, power steering, hydraulic operation. Tires are expensive, so factor condition into purchase price.

What to offer? Depends on all of the above.

One of the best Deere ever made. Price varies a good bit. They are very expensive to buy if they are in good shape. They bring more than when they where new.

Thanks for the info so far. Had a closer look after I started this thread. 5035 hrs showing on the meter, it is a diesel. It doesn't run, so hard to check everything. It was working a couple years ago in a neighbor's hay field, then started losing power, so it was left in the field. Might be as simple as a fuel problem, or? Oil seepage at the steering column & rear pto shaft, but motor & trany are fairly dry. Needs a seat, steering wheel, mostly for cosmetic reasons. I can fix most anything on it, but it might be more of a project than I want? Is a great looking old tractor though!

The bad thing about the 4020's is if you start doing a lot of repairs you get into it for more then it's worth really quick. The good side is once you have one that's running they are pretty reliable. If you're planning on doing this for a project and then try to sell later I'd pass. If you want to keep it then depends on the price. No more then $4500 is what I'd give. Parts are easy to come buy though. These tractors come up for sale a good bit in running condition and I'd just want to buy a running tractor then a non running one.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. Likely only get it if the price is too good to say no. Thanks!

Just be careful, it sat out in the field for "a couple" of years for a reason. And sometimes a "couple" is really 7 or so,,,, ever watch Judge Judy?

We hay with a 4020 with a powershift and its a sweet running older machine. Cast rims and loaded tires. Very heavy tractor. The pto is drifting and it smokes a little bit. very good on fuel to for that size tractor. The seat leaves a bit to be desired! make sure it has the weights on the front end or you will be shortly looking for them.

Yes, more than 2 years, but no more than 4. It was on my neighbors place, now on my property waiting on a trailor to come get it, but it'll likely be awhile.

It has the large front weight. I might ask if I can mess with it and see if I can get it running...
