After fifty three years on earth I just bought my first pair of bib overalls. Oh, Carhartt ducks, thanks for asking. First off, I freakin' love em' and could live in them. However, I always carry a leatherman and occasionally a light in a belt case. Now I'm at a loss what to do and I figured that I'd reach out to you veteran bib wearers. If I shove everything in my pockets it's crazy uncomfortable. Maybe just learn to adapt, carry a smaller multi tool or are there secrets out there that I don't know about?

Get some adhesive backed velcro and use the hook side to stick it to your chest, back, arm, wherever there is enough hair to hold it ;)

Hmmm ... the back is inconvenient and the "wherever" may prove to be quite painful :)

That's why I went with Proppers cargo pants

and
holdup-suspenders.

I can fit an 11" laptop in the cargo pants pocket, or a 3lb sledge and a bunch of tools. Sometimes I've had 15lbs of tools in the pockets. And the suspenders never let go.

Can you get bibs with cargo pockets?

/edit - large cargo pockets. That's why I buy Proppers, they are full size, military style cargo pockets, not little tiny things.

Here! Here! on the suspenders - lol. I've never owned a pair but they are definitely on my list.

Enjoy. I wore them when I was a kid, and I hated them. Only the poor kids wore them; all the rest wore "belt pants" which was another name for blue jeans. I swore that I would never wear another pair when I got old enough to work and buy my own clothes. I can still remember answering the call and having to wear a befouled suspender around my neck for the rest of the day.

This thread is funny.

I carry a good size lock-back knife in its belt sheath in the right leg tool pocket of my Carhartts....or sometimes a putty knife as well. But be careful when mowing on hills (depending on the exact situation), it might fall out and be lost. Thus I move it to the left rear pocket. The right rear holds a large kerchief for sweat. As a rule, I don't wear them (Carhartt) to church on Sunday. I find those bibs with lighter material to be cooler than belted pants.

Oh yeah, a "befouled" strap or loosing your glasses in that process is a risk.:D

Just wear your leather man in the pliers pocket on the side of the right leg. A cell phone can go there too. If you keep your money in the chest pocket it's easy to keep track of.

I second the motion for cargo pants...
The biggest issue with overalls is if you eat a lot of flatulence producing foods...remember they tend to vent towards the top front...

Seems we've encountered differing opinions on suspenders - lol.

I, for one, get really tired of forever pulling up my jeans (and, no I'm not fat - lol) ... climbing in/out/on/off different equipment. Seems like a workable solution to me. Of course, I've never used them so my thoughts are certainly subject to change.

My only bibs have been for skiing - not work. I'd be more inclined to wear lighter weight coveralls. I can attest, the wife looks awesome in hers :)

The bad thing about cargo pockets is that if you have something like a mini-mag light it can fall exactly horizontally down in the bottom of the pocket and then it is quite uncomfortable as it goes across the side of your thigh when you move, instead of parallel to your thigh. Screwdrivers and pens/pencils will do the same thing.

I'd just take the leatherman out of its sheath and put it in your pocket. I've carried a large folding knife for years in my bibs.

At age 61 I bought my first pair last winter. Best money I spent all year. They are insulated, Schmidt brand from TSC. I shopped for Carhartt on-line but could not be sure of the correct size, so tried on a pair in TSC and they fit just fine. Love the suspenders, pockets, and zippers. Very warm while moving snow and snow shoeing.

Probably will get a pair of uninsulated for splitting rocks and working in the garage.

Here in southwest Virginia bibs are the way to go. I never wore them till we moved nere 2 years ago, and I thought " why not ?" I absolutely love them and my wife loves that I'm a country boy...

I love my bibs much safer to load then the cargo pants. Put too much in the cargo pants and when you are in a store reaching up to take something off the top shelf and its in your hands the cargo pants go south in a hurry.:ashamed:

Get the button attachment kind. The clam shell clamp-type do not hold when you have fifteen pounds of tools in your pockets.

The great thing about overalls is that they don't bind and they breath a lot better -- like no belt to make you sweat around your waste. Suspenders can do much the same but you still have the pinch at the waste when stooping and bending. The insulated ones are just the thing in really cold weather. Plus they offer that extra layer of protection when you are lifting stuff against your chest.

I've had an extensive bib wardrobe for years -- one for every occasion. Basic blue for everyday wear, light weight light blue pin stripe for hot weather, painters white for porch sitting, hickory stripe for really dirty work [won't show the dirt], insulated for winter [by the way I can name at least six reasons I prefer WearGuard over Carhartt], wool plaid for formal occasions like Thanksgiving in our log cabin. And don't laugh, they are a very nice gray with subtle green and red plaid lines -- even wore them to church in the country during bad winter weather, always appropriate attire.

I have an old pair of lightweight Dickies (blue denim) that are ideal for hot weather, a couple pair of Dickies hickory stripe - little heavier cloth than the blue denim, and a pair of these:
Men's Ultimate Fire Hose Work Overalls - Duluth Trading
I really like the material, features and construction of the duluths in cool and cold weather - except for the elastic shoulder straps and newfangled strap buttons. They're a 1/4 turn quick-open thing that likes to come open by themselves. IMO, if they had a regular button and wire clip on non-elastic straps they'd be perfect. I could live with the elastic shoulder straps but the buttons are enough to keep me from buying another pair (or two or three)...
I also have two pair of these:
Side Clip Suspenders - Men's Regular Side Clip Suspenders - Duluth Trading
that I don't use any more because they tear up the waistband on pants. I resorted to cutting a small strip of scrap leather and putting it inside the clip to protect the waistband. It works but now I have something better.
If I don't plan to be working outside all day long, I'll throw on a pair of jeans with these:
Button Suspenders - Men's Duluth Trading Button Suspenders - Duluth Trading
and these:
Antique Silver Buttons - Duluth Trading
Once I have a pair of dress jeans that are too worn to be 'dress', I pop some buttons on them and they're good for another life as work pants.
I wore a Navy uniform for 22 years and a suit and tie for another 25 years so I don't dress up any more than necessary nowadays. :)
