Why do you live where you live?

Ideally I'd still be in Zimbabwe, but thats not going to happen as Im one of the million or so people that's not welcome there. Im in South Africa because my wife doesn't want to move to Zambia, and because I cant afford it!

As long as I'm in Africa I'm OK.

I think NC is heading the same way, may even be there already. I am constantly amazed at how many able bodied looking men are standing around the streets doing nothing but have a place to live, cell phones, food, etc all paid for. Just catch the bus downtown and pick up a check.

I see no one responded from Northern New Jersey. Okay, I understand that. We live in the farm and horse country part of Jersey. Wife and daughter have horses. I have the toys to keep the best looking pastures in town. Yeah, my company consolidated with the larger sister company. We moved from below the Mason Dixon line to this place that 4 months of the year is really beautiful. Lakes, pastures, farm land abound. The rest of the time is dreary & gloomy. But the best part, is heading west to the Delaware Water Gap. Unlike George Washington, crossing it from East to West is a wonderful feeling. I love paying my $1.00 to see that wonderful sign " Welcome To PA" or at some crossings "You are leaving New Jersey". Now that makes my heart flutter. Retirement plan is to truck my toys, including my Harley, to Eastern TN or KY and ride the Blue Ridge and all them moonshiner roads down yonder.

Oh man - your post rang a bell for me!

I was born and raised in NJ. Split parents so spent half my time in an suburban area (Wayne) and the other in the northern part near Delaware Water Gap. Back then it was all woods and small towns - little general stores and all (Columbia - Blairstown area). But I had to live most of the time near the city. I'll never forget my graduation day from high school. I wanted out of NJ so badly but knew I should finish high school. The day of graduation I had my pick-up (yes I had a pick-up in suburban NJ) and parked just on the other side of the school yard fence. When I got my diploma in my hand, I ran and jumped the fence - got in my pickup and headed west. There was no better feeling than when I crossed the Delaware river and saw the sign "Welcome to Pennsylvania"! The other most proud moment was when I got a Pennsylvania plate for my pickup and could take that ugly tan plate off the front of my truck.

That was 38 years ago and still know that was one of the best decisions of my life.

Yep, I am a happy man.

I'm really surprised the high percentage of posters on this thread that have a logistical reason for where they are. I'm also saddened by that. When I meet my Maker I want to be able to say I lived where and how I belonged, rather than where logistics dictated.

I think my perspective comes from 40 years in the Military, going to places I didn't want to go, but always coming back to where I belonged. :)

I call that being practical, and then adjust to what you have!

Once you get married and have kids, it's hard to move. Too much stress on the family.

One of my Dad's favorite quotes was "Happiness is not having everything you want, Happiness is wanting everything you have". So with that as the goal, I find it impractical to move somewhere I don't belong and adjust. :)

Nice quote! Sometimes I need to stop and look around me and see just what I do have in this life. Thanks.

Reflection is beneficial to all of us. The simple fact that we can be on this website is worth reflection.

I told a friend of mine that I don't deserve all I have. He said, if you didn't deserve it, you wouldn't have it. With some reflection, that's a very deep statement. :)
