I only get around 18.5 at 80MPH. I have had my mileage up to 19.8 driving 70-75mph. I mostly average low 19's with a 5.0 F-150. My neighbor had a Ecoboost lariat supercab and he was getting lows 18's with it. For some reason he traded it on a STX supercab with a 5.0 and he is getting around 19 now.

I honestly think the 5.0 is right with the Eco when it comes to mileage. The only advantage to the Eco is when towing, then it shines.

My uncle has a 2013 4x4 Limited with 3.55 gears and according to his dash his average is 21 mpg. His has 20" wheels and almost 40,000 miles to date.

Chris

21 mpg over lifetime (40,000 miles)? A coworker has the 3.55 4x4 lariat and is getting almost exactly what I am. Are you going into engineering mode to grab lifetime values?

I don't doubt the ecoboost does not tow good but I would like to see a real world comparison between it and the 5.0. All the test are done under full throttle. Who tows constantly under full throttle. I would be nice if someone did a test from a 55MPH roll going up a hill and see how well they maintained their speed.

Neighbors getting a ave of 16.5 with his 2012 EB.

Yep, I average 2*.* mpg going down hill, with the wind, 3 feet behind a semi, and holding my breath. I hear it all the time at the restaurant in the morning.

Is your uncles 21 mpg over the life of the truck? You can see the lifetime average by going into engineering mode by holding down the "ok" button on the steering wheel for a few seconds before starting the truck. You then cycle through various points using the Ok button until you see the screen I posted.

Here is a picture of mine. Mine is 15.6 mpg since new and I have about 34,000 miles. It will be interesting to see if yours is greater. Obviously everyone uses their truck differently. Mine truck spends most of its life in town and I tow frequently.

jjborne, it may not be the lifetime ave mpg like you say. From what I read, the RAFE is the running average fuel economy. It is the last 500 mile average that the computer uses to figure the miles to empty.

"Distance to empty is calculated using a running average fuel economy,
which is based on your recent driving history of 500 miles (800 km).
This value is not the same as the average fuel economy display. The
running average fuel economy is re-initialized to a factory default value if
the battery is disconnected."

I believe you are correct. I haven't researched this in a long while. Back a couple years ago when I learned of these screens, the buzz was that this was the lifetime average. I guess the last couple years have educated most that this isn't true. Thanks for the heads up.

I was always a GM guy till I saw a cross section of a Ford frame next to a GM frame. I switched and never looked back. I bought a new GMC dually Duramax that overheated from day one and was told by the service manager " Oh that's NORMAL" ....WHAT !!!!! Normal for a idiot light to come on and say ENGINE OVERHEATING? After reading hundreds of other guys on the net that called GM to complain, I called and the person on the phone had the stones to tell me " OH you are the first to tell us about this no one else has a problem"

Ya, I get all manufacturers have good and bad years and models, but for me it's how they handle issues, like GM handled the key issue.

Add me to the list that doesn't understand why anyone would want a truck with a box shorter than 6' . I can understand not wanting a 8' box with a crew cab, as they can be a pain to park. Seems to me a full size SUV would like a suburban would be more versatile than a truck with a 5 1/2' box.

My muddy dirtbikes and wet kayaks don't seem to mind my 5 1/2' box. Don't think either would fit in a suburban. There must be a lot of people who do understand and want them too because they sure sell the heck out of them.

I wouldn't want the 5.5' box but you are right...they sell a bunch of them!

We just spent a week at a cabin on Table Rock lake in Mo. Just for me, my wife and 2 kids I had the 6.75' bed full of stuff. I have a topper and it was stacked above the bed rails. I don't put extra gear in the boat. It pushes the trailer / tire limits by itself.

Same with hunting. Two dog boxes and 2-3 guys gear it fills up in a hurry.

For me, the question will not be bed size. I will have to order the crew cab 6.5' bed. I would like to convert to a tonneau cover. But after all these years (20 or so) the topper will be hard to give up.

To each his own.

19.6 mpg at 54 mph average isn't very good. Must of had a strong headwind or a lot of idle time.

Yeah, 19.6 is not very good for a 4x4 supercrew gas V8 truck that is 5,500lbs. The truck is supposed to get 19mpg and it did better. It was up to 19.8 but it drove it to town and pulled it down.

I agree that they make different size trucks for different needs and that what works for one person may be unthinkable for another. Thats what's great about having so many choices today I remember when having an extended cab pickup was a huge upgrade in cab space!

However don't underestimate the versatility of the suburban, remember it has a roof rack for kayaks and such. :)

Here is my dash. 2012 Ecoboost, 3.73 FX4. 37000 miles this is the average.

I hand calculated 3 tanks and all were within .1mpg.
