I just bought my 27th vehicle last month and 2/3 have been pickup trucks. 4 diesels, a dually, long beds, short beds, regular cabs, extended cabs, crew cabs, ect.

For me the most useful configuration is a Crew Cab 4x4. There is less than one time a year I wish I had a longer bed and when I do I have a 18' trailer to fill the need.

For me it came down to needing a crew cab, 4x4, and fitting in my garage. No way in heck I'm letting any vehicle I own sit outside. They cost too much.

My tractors stay shedded, my truck sits outside because my garage is too packed with stuff and it would be a tight fit anyways. If I really need to get my truck out of the weather I can pull it under one of the tractor barns. As for crew cabs and short beds I've had all configurations of trucks you can imagine. I don't think I could ever go back to a non- crew cab truck. If I ever need the extra bed length I have plenty of trailers. The other times I wouldn't be using that longer bed, it sure would be a pain to drive around with. I put too much junk in the cab of my truck that I need to do without the extra room.

When I bought mine I was wanting another 8' bed but settled for the crew cab with the 6' bed. Now that I have the short bed I really have not missed the long bed very much. Really depends on what you do with the truck. I mostly tow and haul building material and if I drop the tailgate I can still take 8 footers so that works for me. The only thing I ever haul that is a pain is a 17' canoe so no matter what bed I had, I have to put a hitch extender rack on for that.
Now if I could only average 18 mph on my truck......

Congratulations. I have a Ford EcoBoost with 37,300 miles and not a single hiccup. It's also a crew cab FX4 3.73 gears. I have averaged 18.7 miles per gallon.

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, and don't want to be grouped into the "hater" category, but I use all 8' of my bed.

Nothing cracks me up more than seeing a "load" of firewood in a 5.5' bed. Sure got a lot of HP under the hood to move 1/2 the wood.

Like you say, good thing it'll pull a trailer.

I have a 8' bed on my 2011 Chev 2500 Crew Cab. I really don't want to go back to a shorter bed but that's because I do use it for cargo capacity.

If I don't really need an open bed I drive my Yukon XL.

If one wants a truck with an open bed there are plenty of combinations enough that almost anyone can have what suits them best.

In our country the bigger challenge is deciding what you really want/need among all the choices available. Then, of course, scraping up the money to pay for it. :D

I would have ordered the 8' bed on my truck but with the crew cab, I could only fit 6.5' bed into the garage... my dad only got extended cab with 6.5' bed because that is all the would fit in his garage..

What kind of highway MPG,s are you getting?


At 68 I get 23mpg. At 75 it's about 21mpg. The overall on the truck with 36,000 miles is 18.7mpg according to the computer. I checked it on two fill ups and it was .1 mpg off so very accurate.

I just towed a 9' wide, 27' long, 13' tall boat that weighs in at 10,300# and I got 9.5 mpg over 800 miles through out Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It was 75mph on the highway and was passing everything I wanted on the big grades where others were at 40mph with the hazard lights on. It could have ran 100mph up them hills with ease.
