About 3 1/2 years ago I was looking for a tractor to maintain a 13 acre horse farm. Was thinking 4wd CUT around 30 hp until I had a chat with the local farmer who recommended more hp and size. Got a '69 Ford 3000 diesel with an Allied 750 loader for $4500 on CL. Added two more CL finds - 6 ft Mott flail mower and 6 ft box blade. Total investment less than $7k. I think it is the best money I have ever spent.

Some thoughts - I'm pretty much a noob on this stuff and I have another full time job. I outsource repair and maintenance tasks as I have a full time job and I don't have the time. Having said that, I have found the maintenance to be pretty much routine stuff, a few welding repairs on the flail and the sway bar chains, new rear tires, but that's been it.

Operating cost - this was the most surprising to me but the thing just sips diesel. I can mow about 8 acres on 2/3 of a tank of diesel.

Tasks - I mow, remove snow, haul, move material, manure, regrade the gravel driveway each spring, lift heavy stuff, haul cut firewood, and took out about a quarter mile of old fencing with it.

What I decided not to do was to get "implementitis." I was considering a post hole digger but decided that once the fencing project was done, it would just collect dust. My take on bigger jobs like that with a specialized implement requirement is that it's economically better to outsource such tasks from a monetary and time perspective. Those two implements plus the loader do 80 - 90% of what needs to be done.

The place looks magnificent since my purchase. The flail mower I especially recommend as a good compromise between a rotary cutter and a finish mower. I have been able to pretty much eradicate a broad leaf weed problem in the pastures. And it is something I can keep up with fairly easily on my schedule. Love love love my old Ford 3000.

Wow. Thanks for so much info. Will look into the flail mower. I really am thinking hard on the Ford 3000. The more I see them the more I believe that is the tractor that my grandad had, it seems to be a good size for what I will need, they are inexpensive and in the budget, and worse comes to worse, you buy one for 5-7K and you hate it, you can turn around and sell it for about the same amount. it seems that these old tractors have had about all the depreciation that they are going to get, and its all a matter of condition and hours as far as what a 3K or a 7K one is like. Haven't seen the best deal come along yet, but still waiting to close on the house. Was supposed to get it last Friday and we are still waiting on the loan people.

Went for $8,400 back in mid March, just outside Washington, DC. I wanted to buy it but SWMBO said I didn't need a THIRD tractor.

So the deals are out there for the patient.

newbury, that would be hard to pass up, sweet size, not many hours, clean, not too old! SWMBO must be very persuasive to get you to not bring that one home.

I thought I was the only person who used SWMBO. LOL. Was thinking of auctions. Never been to one, but planning on going to one this weekend just to see how they are. I figure cash is king at one of those. Not sure if yuou get to see them run or try them out or anything. figured I'd better go watch a couple before I actually take any money with me.

Auctions are such a gamble. Sometimes great deals. Sometimes equipment that has been abused, that you do not discover until after 'winning' the auction and arriving home.

My local Kubota dealer gets one or two tractors in the abused/auction category each year, purchased cheap but too expensive to repair.

You've got to know what you are buying and why it is being sold. Most of the "stuff" I've gotten off the public surplus auctions has been "surplused" due to either age or reconfiguration of facilities.

My M4700 came with about 1400 hrs well maintained by the county. It was sold because they got a newer tractor. The "people" selling did not get any of the proceeds of the sale, rather it returned to the counties coffer.

The real deals come about when some overworked clerk lists something wrong to the buyers benefit. I bought almost all the equipment I needed for a woodshop for about $1,000.

The listing description was "tools" with no picture.

And then when I went to pick the stuff up they gave me the bandsaw for free.

SWMBO set aside one room of our retirement house as a "library". She wanted shelving to match what we already had, solid oak which we bought new about 30 years ago.

I picked up

for $350. Which completed her library with two units left over.

buying used. you need to have know how to fix the tractor, it doesn't what brand or model, used = maintenance and repair.

with used units, tire tread can be a big deal, tires are costly, 50% tread to me is balled. there is a huge difference in traction on new tires vs older tires.

oil leaks, hyd oil leaks, etc... if ya looking for a backhoe, then it is doubtful you will find one that doesn't have a hyd oil leak some place, and engine may have a leak some place as well.

4x4 / MFWD, is not always what is cracked up to be, 2WD can get a lot done, a good experienced operator and some experience on a machine can do wonders.

all the hydrualic cylinders from FEL to backhoe to other, if you turn on tractor let it warm up for a couple minutes and then run it hard for say another 15 minutes and work everything to point warm hyd oil gets into all the cylinders. then raise everything up in the air, then turn off machine, hopefully everything stays up in the air, if it does not it means seals, or hyd pump, to hyd valves may need to be rebuilt with good seals.

double check "left and right rear break pedals" to make sure they stop the unit or need adjustment.

double check the grease fittings on mower deck to axle bearings on the front, to other places, to see if things were greased.

see if the bolt to drain oil on engine has some wear marks on it.

a freshly clean engine and tractor that was power washed and scrubbed, i get uneasy about. dusty, oil, greased up unit looking ugly. no biggy, but just cleaned *arghs*

see if they have "shop manual" for the tractor. good sign that maintenance was done, and things repaired as needed.

get the shop manual for the tractor you end up getting they are expensive little gems, but they are gems, and normally worth all the diagrams, code notations, and detailed instructions for tearing apart / putting back together and what torque settings for this or that, etc....

never buy site un-seen, physically drive there and test run the unit.

example with the ford 555c TLB (tractor loader backhoe) went online criaglist, tractorhouse, looked up a bunch of units that fit my needs and planned a day trip to go look at all the units. there is a surprising difference amongst all the units, from tire tread, to oil leaks, to just overall how much damage and abuse a machine had, various bushings and pins worn, extremely loose front ends, hardly any brakes, engine oil and hyd oil look extremely old and not been changed in who knows how long. dents and bangs, oil filters and air filters, that looks like originally new 10 plus years ago when machine was new, dry rotted tires, all lights busted out, if it was a cab if it actually had any windows that were not busted out, to emergency brake wire cut on purpose it looked like on one unit, etc...

i am by no means a mechanic, just a farm bozo that had to learn, or do without. and the day trip i took to look at i think total 13 units. was an eye opener. and test driving was even more so on some units was rather scary.

Great ideas from Boggen, including:
oil leaks, hyd oil leaks, etc... if ya looking for a backhoe, then it is doubtful you will find one that doesn't have a hyd oil leak some place, and engine may have a leak some place as well.

I think that Square1 has given some very good advice earlier. You will be many dollars ahead to forgo the backhoe attachment and rent a mini hoe or a mini ex the few times you need it.

4x4 / MFWD, is not always what is cracked up to be, 2WD can get a lot done, a good experienced operator and some experience on a machine can do wonders.

Unfortunately it sounds like he's a new operator, not an experienced one. 2wd will get the job done, but 4wd will do it better in the compact utility tractor range, especially with a green operator or with a loader.
