I am thinking about adding a winch to the front of my small trailer in case I need to get my lawnmower on if the motor fails and I need to bring it to the shop. I would appreciate any photos and details how you added one to your trailer. Thanks

A small hand crank winch will work for a lawnmower. We have one that we use for our small tractor and it works fine. Tommorow I will snap a picture for you.

For something like that, I think I would get a boat trailer winch and maybe a mounting post. or put it on your front frame rail.

That's how we have ours set up. You can buy everything you need at northern tool.

Buy a come-a -long. I keep one in Toy Hauler 5th wheel just in case of a golf cart failure. Never needed it but its there just in case. Get one with a pulley that doubles your pulling power. I got one, nice fold up in plastic case, also look for solid gears and ratchet parts if they are made of several pieces of steel riveted together. Pass on it chinese junk.

Thanks for the replys. I have a boat winch but I was looking for some photos of how to attach it. I don't weld.
Cowboy - What parts from Northern tool would you suggest?

We just bought the winch, cable, and the hook from northern. I don't weld either but a friend of mine mounted it to the front of the trailer with some angle iron. I will try a get a photo tomorrow for you. It's a very simple setup.

Some ideas:

If you have a straight tongue, boat trailer winch posts are made to bolt on. Then bolt the winch on top. No welding needed.

The nice thing about a come-along is it can be used for other functions. Some have the ability to be single pull or double.

cowboy and Bruce,
Thanks. I have been fishing all my life (and I am "in the ninth inning", "on the back nine"). I have owned boats since I was 18yrs. old until Katrina. I didn't think about a boat type winch post. I was over thinking it.

Redneck,
A come-a-long will be my backup plan. Thanks

While a come-along makes sense, it's one more piece of junk to have to store someplace until you are tired of it being in the way and leave it home when you need it.

Harbor Freight has winches for under $30. I have a couple of them.

I can't weld

I finally started welding a couple of years ago and taught myself. It's a great ability to have, there are so many small things that I can take care of now in a few minutes (and some bigger ones too.) I should have started years ago.

Xfaxman,
That looks interesting. I will check HD to see what it looks like.

Here is mine, with a short rope and a longer one if I need it. I keep it in the truck fenderwell storage box.

Here is the winch on my car trailer. It is removable and will fit a 2'' trailer hitch.

I'll get a picture of the winch on my utility trailer tomorrow. I had a hand winch I was going to put on it but it was easier to put a electric winch on it. The handle on the hand winch I had was long and complicated things.

Thanks Roger. That's a nice set-up but may be overkill for a lawnmower hauler. Do you have it on a winch post as was discussed above?

Norman,

The upright for the winch mount on the car trailer is 2x2 box tubing.

I took some pictures of my utility trailer winch setup today.

With this setup you can use anything that will hook into a 2" receiver. I have a ball that I can haul latch a wood splitter on to haul. (Yes, the ball mount is bent. A guy ran into me with truck with a snow plow on bent it. This is all I use it for.)

You said you had a boat winch. Does it have a strap on it or a cable? I had a strap hand winch on a car trailer and it did not work good. The strap would get all messed up/ twist over if you could not pull straight on it. I traded it to a guy for a hand winch with a cable on it. Even if you go with a hand winch I still recommend you make it removable that way you can take it off and keep it out of the weather.

I got the 2'' receiver portion at harbor freight. ATV Hitch Adapter

Roger,
Thanks for the photos. I like the idea of using a 2" receiver to make the winch removable. My winch is for cable.

No problem. Good luck with your project.
