I can't get my B2620 out of 2 WD back to 4WD. Lever doesn't want to engage - even.

Put the transmission in drive, move forward a bit, let off the pedal then try to engage 4wd.

Also helps to turn the steering wheel while engaging the lever as you roll forward at very low torque.
If this doesn't work, check for any debris/sticks/etc jamming the 2-4WD shift linkage.

I had a similar problem going from 4wd to 2wd on my B7610. The lever seemed to require forcing. I'd engage, creep, try again. I just kept on doing it and it worked w/o grinding or breaking anything.

If you have a loader, use the bucket to raise the front end off the ground. A lot of times this takes enough pressure off the front end to shift easier.

Yes. I gave it three tries, and then walked away. When I came back I "jiggled" everything: steering wheel, transmissions...and it slipped right into FWD. I see you have a bunch of tractors: I think that is what I have to do also. One for the FEL and backhoe' One for the grader, cultivator and other PTO stuff; and one for mowing. Last time, the putting the mower deck only took a few minutes; this time took almost 2 hours (I think because I was frustrated with the 4wd... and the misquitoes and ticks). But now, all is good...UFDAH

Yes. I gave it three tries, and then walked away. When I came back I "jiggled" everything: steering wheel, transmissions...and it slipped right into FWD. Then I had trouble hooking up the mid PTO for the belly mower ....got that done, too. This may be easy for some; but its a challenge....and I get VERY HAPPY when it all comes together. So then, I mowed...we got about 5" of rain, and the "grass" was deep, with standing water in some places. It ain't pretty, but its mowed, and a lot of mosquitoes got fed. Love Northern MN....

I had to do this, too. :)

be sure there's not an obstruction underneath like a branch ....happened to me today, glad it was an easy fix

I find with my B2620 if I keep light pressure on the lever while slowly moving forward,or backwards, it will easily go into,or out of,4WD.

That'll usually do the trick

This sounds like a great tip; thanks for passing it on. I also think it's good to idle down the throttle also when you shift.

I am new to owning a tractor and have a Kubota BX2370 with the same issue. I am going to try some of the fixes here and see if it work for me. Great info at this site.

I own five 4wd tractors - two brands. All go into 4wd easily while moving straight ahead. All can be easily shifted back to 2wd by using full power for a second and then letting off as you simultaneously operate the lever. The transition from power to eng braking unloads the gears for an easy disengagement.

Everyone has a slightly different approach for releasing the tension, but they probably all achieve the same result. With my stuff it seems to bind mostly when on a hill or the front wheels are turned. If the tractor is rolling straight ahead on level ground, it generally goes in/out of 4wd easily. Occasionally you might need to back off the HST pedal or release the clutch so it's coasting. It does help to use the 4wd and range selectors fairly often. Lack of use can make these controls harder to operate when you really need them most.

I never have any problems shifting into 4wd, but sometimes I have trouble shifting back into 2wd. If I drive slowly while shifting it seems to work better.

Thanks for your input. I will let you know if I am successful. So far, I really like the Kubota, it appears to be a well made piece of machinery. I cannot wait to try it out in the snow.

Have a B2920, as folks have said the trick is getting pressure off the gears so they can sync. You can just be stopped on a flat surface and rock it a bit if needed, or as someone mentioned driving, give it a bit of a boost then clutch in and switch to 4wd as it rolls.

Tried the suggestion of slowing going forward with the Kubota and it shifted very smoothly back into 2WD. Thanks for your help.

Be sure the front tires are fully inflated. If the tires are under inflated (especially with a load in the bucket) or bald of tread then they will rotate at a different speed than the rear tires causing a bind of the gears. This bind will make it hard to change front axle.
