Iv got a ford 5500 I recently acquired from an old lady. It was her dads and it was parked when he got to old to run it with only 500 hours on it. Long story short It worked great. Untill now. This winter my suction line collapsed at the tank where the rubber elbow comes out of the tank. It was about -15 out so the hyd oil was extream oh thick. Anyways this elbow is no longer avilable so I wielded two barbed ends together in a 90 and coupled with 2" hyd suction hose to replace the elbow this spring when it warmed up. Now iv got a loud howeling noise when trying to run anything hydrolic. I know there's air in the system but I cannot figure out how to blead it or reprise the pump. Everything works just very slow and lots of pump noise. Don't want to burn the pump up. Please help!

You probably have a suction leak.

Iv got every coupler on the suction line replaced. Only thing I didn't change was the pump seal. But it is in pretty good shape. Iv just got air in the pump system and don't know how to bleed it out???

You may have run the pump with ice blocking flow out of the tank.

Old iron collects water ... even in the oils.

If the oil tank is full, your pump will self prime. If the lines are clear and the pump in good order. Can the hose have collapsed and delaminated? It would look good externally, but wouldn't flow.

Good luck

A hyd system self bleeds by using the cyl or motors.

Some people use a heavy grease on all the fittings and hose to see if the leak stops.

Yo probably can not see a pin hole leak in a suction hose.

I'm going to drain all oil and flush the system and clean out the tanks. Some dealer told me I should use a 20 weight hyd oil. I thought at least a 32?

?

Can you explain how the pump primes using a cylinder or motor? Thank you.

Most gear pumps will prime if the in port is flooded.

The cyl or motor need not to be in the circuit.

An open center hyd system is always pumping fluid.

If the sump is lower that the pump. air may be necessary to help force fluid though the piping, about 5
psi.

This is what Jrus said.

In order to bleed, you have to exercise the hyd components.

To prime, you have to have fluid at the pumps IN port. This happens quickly when the tank is above the pump. If tank is below the pump, it may take a while.

Your welcome.

Tank is below the pump. Iv got 20 gallons to put in it tonight ill probably have to get some more before I fire it up. Hopefully once it's full it will get fluid and I can get the air worked out.

Have you changed the hydraulic filter? If it is stopped up it will restrict flow and the pump will squeal from starvation. The filter is located in the hydraulic tank and it is on the suction side of the pump.

As stated earlier, the hydraulic system will bleed itself just by being operated.

Mike

EDIT: After looking at a parts breakdown, it isn't a filter, it is a strainer. I am going to attach a link. If it works, look at item 46 in the breakdown. It is the reservoir outlet screen.

I'm not able to view that item on my phone ill try on my computer tomorrow. Iv got a new filter I did not see a screen anywhere in the tanks I pulled the bottom plates off both and cleaned them but didn't see any screen do you know what tank it's located in. Iv got two tanks with a cross over tube the right tank is the return from pump goes through filter to the other tank to pick up tube to pump.

The strainer is in the left tank. It threads into the tank and the suction line connects to the strainer. You will probably have to drain any oil in the tanks.

So everything's clear as far as I can tell. Pump still screaming...... Ran the hoe and loader for awhile today thinkng the air would work out of it. Noticed the right tank had no vent so it builds pressure but its not in the dip stick port. Then the left tank doesn't have alot of oil in it but is vented. Only thing I can think of is I need more oil so it forces it to the left tank with the pick up? On the dip stick tube it doesn't show anything... But it's got at least 25 gallons in it. I took out 40 but I put 10 in before I drained it all..:confused3:

Did you ever solve this issue? Did it turn out to be that you were low still?
