My brother put this on our L5740 and the next will be the M8540; really like the one on Richard's tractor.

Here's what I did after I speared my lower grill and battery!I was lucky to miss the radiator.

I did the same thing before doing any damage since I spend alot of time in the woods. I put the expanded metal outside the cross bars so the metal would push against the bars thinking that it would be stronger that way. Not quite as pretty that way tho.

Mine was a pain in the butt to build. Needed to fold to open the hood. I'm sure it's saved my grill and possibly radiator a lot of times.

I thought that was the only reason to have insurance, to cover stupid.

Don't forget the idiots....you have to cover against idiots....most of them have a cell phone in their hand while traveling at double digit speeds.

What's the difference between an "accident" and "stupid"? It seems to me that "stupid" ought to pay their own way vs being a cause for rate increases. ... but who is gonna be able to sort that out. :confused3:

I built a brush guard and skid plate for my M9540. After a year's use, based on the scraped paint, they've served their purpose.

If you live in the woods, this is 100% the only way to do it.
These three guys get an A+.

In my next life, I'm gonna drop a couple philosophy classes and take welding instead.:D

TripleR- Great looking cage, you can paint mine "Envy Green", but right now I'm going to strengthen the grill guard before we get to far into spring.

I know what you mean, we need to get one on our 8540 and my brother's Kioti too, we bent the heck out of ours last year.

I spent Saturday morning pulling cedar trees with the Bobcat and tree puller. Spent the afternoon piling them with the Kubota and Grapple. I'm sure the grill guard saved damage many, many times, especially when working with cedars. I shoulda took a pic of the pile. I'll try to do that this afternoon. I drive into the pile with the load lifted high until the front tires start climbing the pile before dumping.

I bet it did Richard, I was grubbing some Autumn Olives a few days ago and I had to be really careful with ours. We are covered up right now, so I don't know when we will get it done.

Here's my current pile.

Yeah Murph, they're heavy when you take em out with the puller cause you have the root ball as well.

Quick update, after $2300.00 worth of parts, my L45 is back together good as new. Now to prevent it from happening again. Here is a pic of what I am toying with as a grill guard (1/2"X1/2" steel bars, 1/2" apart).:)

That will certainly beat what you had. Lot harder to build, but I prefer the guard to wrap around the sides. If building a flat one, I'd want it to be as wide as the FEL arms permit. That would help with those sticks that try to sneak in at an angle.

And I would want to add the expanded metal screen for that errant stick that will work its way through.

I busted up the grill on my L3400 a year ago. Anybody have an idea what the replacement costs (the plastic grill/cover)? Luckily I didn't damage any radiator or engine parts.
