is there any real difference between these two other then 6 hp? Is it a real six hp difference or just different labels? Can the 4040 be upgraded in the future? since it's the same engine, weight etc. I also noticed these have the fuel tank down low instead of behind the seat, good or bad change?

also would you choose a http://www.grapplehoe.com/ or back hoe.

Welcome to TBN.
I have the XR3037HC (smaller model) but similar build. I have found the low fuel tank to very user friendly. Easy to access and fill. Much simpler than behind the seat and up high. Can't help you choose between the 40/46 as specs are almost identical. Looks like they boosted the fuel pump for more HP. don't know if frame is any better, stronger, or thicker made. I'm sure a few 40/46 owners will pop in with the answers you are looking for.

I have a 2013 R4041H. Tier 3. I believe the only difference is the HP rating. I think after your warranty is over you could have a mechanic turn up the fuel pump to get you the extra HP if you want it. (At least that's what we did with trucks in the old days). My fuel tank is behind the seat, not real crazy about that location, but it's not intolerable. I haven't really seen the new lower mounted tanks, I hope they are in a protected area. Can't help you on the backhoe. I only have 55 hrs on mine and I love it. It plowed snow great this winter and I plan to work it pretty hard this summer and I'm sure it will take it. Good luck, and ask away.

I thought I had heard that the 47 also uses larger injectors ... ?

I have the xr4046hc and I like where the fuel tank is. It is real easy to fill. Mine is a tier 4 tractor and haven't had any problems. I couldn't compare it to the 4040 as I don't have one of each. :)

I would be interested to see if one of those lower tanks could be adapted to an older model. I really think I would like a lower one.

I could take some close up pictures and measurements if that would help.
