Where do you carry your gun on your tractor?

/ Where do you carry your gun on your tractor? #81
I have a CCW, I started hunting with a gun when I was about 5 years old and was taught by my dad proper safety before I went hunting the first time. I understand people being concerned about a lot of people with guns out there I am too, but I cant not figure out a better system. I like the feeling all my neighbor's have at least one gun and know how to use them properly.

I appreciate your reply and don't take it as offensive. But I'm somewhat confused by some of what you said. I was not carrying a weapon, had been scared poo-less by the boarder doing what he did, when I was blindsided by him coming out of nowhere, and my wife kept telling me to look out, to and for what I had no clue, until I saw him a foot from my driver's side window between me and another car, in the opposite lane going the opposite direction, rolled down my window enough to be able to yell for him to get out of the road, when of course he yelled back the typical meth-head BS about where I should go.
My intent was to stop him which I accomplished and get out to speak to him about how he could have been killed and how stupid doing something like that in the dark actually was.
Granted I didn't know for sure he was a meth-head until a doctor I went to for unrelated issue told me the guy had come to him demanding drugs for supposedly being hurt by a driver; which was total nonsense and the doc threw him out of his office. Now interestingly enough, I was just viewing another gun thread about licensing of carry permits being made legal in Illinois. BUT here in VT I could have been carrying a handgun, could have had it concealed, and could have brandished it, or worse used it to defend myself, all within the current law in this state?! I get the whole using a weapon to de-escalate a situation, but here again a lot of discussion has been going on about warning shots and police methods being empty entire clip, go for center of mass vs. trying to wound to take into custody.
So as un-schooled Joe citizen, with no specific training, what is it I should have done differently? And if someone wants to start or have me start a new thread to discuss this let me know.

Thanks,

CM

I could probably write a whole page on this, but honestly am worn out with it. Just a couple of things, a gun is not used to diffuse a situation, it is a last result when efforts to diffuse or disengage are unsuccessful. I have never known of or spoken to anyone with the proper training and experience to advocate shooting to wound. Shooting on the range and in a real life use of force incident are totally different things.

Center mass is the common terminology for deploying a deadly weapon for practical as well as legal reasons.

James k0ua has a Law Enforcement background as well in training civilians, so hopefully he will elaborate, I have already said more on this subject than was my intention.

CM.. where to start... tell you what .. it sounds like you are sincere about wanting more information. Why don't you go ahead and start another thread in Friendly Politics tomorrow, so we can all think about what has been said and how we want to respond. I am sure if we were all in a coffee shop together it would be easier to see each others point of view. Now none of us were there at the incident you mentioned, and all we have to go on is what you tell us, but for the rest of the evening why don't you think about what you want to say in your new thread, and we will all have a little time to reflect on what we want to say too. All I will say in closing is from an ex law enforcement officers and a CCW licensee's point of view you did not paint a favorable picture in the way you handled that situation. Lets let it go at that for now, and pick this up later.

Well said. You can't call that self defense at all.

I don't recall saying anything about self defense on my part, just described a situation that came about because some drug crazed idiot crossed my path on a skateboard.

So you used your car as a weapon, but question why others carry?

I did not use it as a weapon, I did chose to force his aze to the curb and he had nowhere to go and fell down, a common occurrence for any skateboarder. The car never touched him and if I wanted to use it as a weapon the outcome would have been very different. The mall we were in has had women kidnapped, raped and killed in years past, as well as other horrendous crimes, and the po-po is situated directly above there and they do absolutely nothing about any of it. I'm not using this as justification of my actions, BUT I'm not to blame for some idiot deciding to do stuff one would only do when hiped up on drugs.

My thoughts too. That fella escalated the situation.

I took action and paid consequences for the action I took, no more, no less.
It's easy to criticize me from where anyone sits at their computer, you weren't there. And you can't say how you'd react either unless you experienced my exact set of circumstances. Different people feel threatened by/ frightened by different things. My intent was not to harm; it was to have a conversation with the boarder; which in retrospect I realize is an unrealistic goal. But my point in sharing this event is not to take flack for it, but to point out that in heat of a situation one can't know for sure if they are packing that the situation might not escalate into something worse than need be. Training is good, I'm all for it, which is why it ought to be a mandatory part of owning and carrying a weapon so both the gun owner and the potential victim have a better chance of a better outcome than just point and shoot. I guess that's what most fear might happen in any given situation; not that people wanting to carry are bad people. I'm doing what I can to understand both sides of why people want to carry, and who ought to, or not, and so forth.

OK. While I was responding to a few posts you wrote the above, as well as others responded too.
I'm fine with taking it elsewhere.

Sorry, where is the 'friendly politics' forum? I seem to remember it might be one of those only open to certain people forums? No?

Well I betcha you have some methheads over there too. We sure have plenty of methmakers around here. But ole Wheedpharma lives in some nice "safe" place. Well I got news for you fella.. There ain't no such of a thing as a safe place to live. Your safety is an illusion. We like to think where we live and work is safe. and 99% or more of the time it is. But it is not. As long as there are people, there will be crime, and sooner or later you may be faced with the prospect of being a victim of that crime. Those of us that ever worked in law enforcement know about the illusion of safety. Law enforcement cannot protect you from what depraved, bad, desperate people can and will do to you if you "number" is up, only you can do that. And even armed, you have a better chance of a good outcome, but it is not guaranteed. Anyone can be blindsided. So may you sleep good at night in you ignorance ,helplessness and hope. It is not paranoia if people really want to hurt you, and they really want to hurt you.

James, you got that right those methheads are everywhere from the big cities to the small towns.

X Army, CCW holder, training on handling of firearms, and the consequences of their use.

Do I ever want to have to use a gun, for other than sporting use, NO NEVER! !!!

I understand that bullets can never be taken back, but I understand their are people whom for whatever reason would do evil.

Looking for a box, to hold STUFF in should be big enough to hold stuff maybe 4"x10"x 5", water and dust proof easy to mount to stuff, maybe a tractor, or mower, easy to open.

CM it is open to everyone, but you have to manually subscribe to it. As the discussion's become quite heated at times. I assumed you were already a member since you have been around a long time. In Friendly Politics (odd name for a forum that is not necessarily friendly) I guess the theory is that newcomers will not be subjected to read the post's unless they want to. Hence the "signing up" procedure. And all discussions of a political nature are supposed to be in there.. they spill out for sure, but as you know sometimes it is frowned upon.. If I start a thread that I think will even possibly become contentious and evoke disagreements, I start it over there. They can still be shut down and locked, but typically they last longer over there.

By the way to gain access I believe you will need to go to your "my home" then "my account" then "permissions". to access the front porch and/or friendly politics.

Thanks for keeping the politics out of this thread. Politics makes a thread smell like horse pucky.
