Where do you carry your gun on your tractor?

/ Where do you carry your gun on your tractor? #61
FWIW, I know that those who don't carry firearms every second of every day wonder why those who do feel the need to feel safe against the potential badguy don't seem to understand that your need to carry doesn't necessarily make those who don't feel any safer because you do carry. How is the unarmed person supposed to determine if YOU are a good guy or a bad guy? I know if everyone carries a weapon at all times, then we'll all be safe, right? Well, the answer is no, that solves nothing, either.
So if you don't want fellow citizens asking about why you need to carry, then maybe it's time to not carry, or just take the heat from those of us who choose not to.
And before the barrage of nasty comments, I live in the country, I own guns, I don't carry or see or feel the need to have a weapon on my person or tractor. I'm a mile from pavement, we have most all the critters and pest animals mentioned in our vicinity and plenty of heroin, meth, and other crazed awholes cited in this thread in our wooded rural areas, in addition to an ever increasing bunch of nutcases in our towns/cities; so our environment is a similar microcosm of most of yours.

I may be misunderstanding you, but I just don't see why those who choose not to feel the need to apply the heat. What I choose to do has no impact on you and I have no desire to change how you live your life.

From post #55, "Meant to ask earlier about the time you desperately needed it; could you say more?"

I was in the process of answering that until I saw this and realized it would be a waste of my time.

CM, we are good with that you don't carry. We don't have a problem with that at all. It is your choice. And I am perfectly content with that. All we ask is don't worry about whether we are carrying or not, Don't think we are paranoid, don't think we are "head cases". A lot of us have seen some VERY bad things happen, and a lot of us have had some bad things actually happen to us. We are like boy scouts we want to "be prepared". If you do not think that way, We are fine with that. No one is trying to tell you to do anything one way or another. And you "know" many of us, and you know we are not some backwoods hillbilly tinfoil hat wearing something or another. Well some of us might be:). You know a lot of us were in Law enforcement or are in Law enforcement. This give us a prospective you may not have. I am here to swear to you and all that will listen, that Law enforcement cannot protect you or only in rare instances anyone. I hope this helps to understand our thinking.

A little background: former LEO (16 years) in county and city jurisdictions. been shot at, and have shot at; involved in several armed swat encounters and not-so-planned 1:1 armed encounters (yes, in a 'quiet, rural state). I carried 24/7 back then and now, as city bus. exec by day and lake home owner at night, (commute an hour each way) I usually have either my SW .45 or Ruger LC9 on me or near me. I don't usually carry while digging in my dirt or mowing grass, but it's OK by me if you do - I have only a few acres. I do carry often when doing other things, cuz I might end up shooting at targets or an occasional gopher on my place before I'm done for the day.
I may never need to draw down on someone - I hope I don't have to. But I'd rather have the option than not if presented with a reason. And I'd rather depend on my ability than depend on you in that situation (but I'm OK with you helping!). I know I cant depend on LEO (30 minutes away) or luck - I've seen too many others use that failed strategy.
I like the idea of a scabbard-mounted rifle boot for the ATV/JD; I've seen them for atv's but haven't thought about adapting one for it and the JD. Thanks for the ideas.

CM, I have not seen any signs on people saying "I'm carrying a Gun". That's the whole idea of CCW. The bad guy's don't follow the law and the Judges slap their hand when caught. So I carry a Colt Commander in a side holster.

I get that the bad guys don't adhere to any rules and the justice system is often useless. Do you feel that you are likely to be attacked by one of them at any time wherever you go, and that by concealed packing you will have a better outcome than if you weren't?
As an example, less than a year ago I was at the movies with my wife and when driving out of the lot a meth head on a skateboard got between me and the car going in the opposite direction as if this was OK. I corralled the idiot with my car, and he had nowhere to go but a sidewalk or roof pillar. He fell down, hit my fender with the board and as I was getting out to give him a piece of my mind smashed me above my eye with the board and tried to leave the scene. I got back in the car and tracked him down and ran him off the sidewalk into the bushes at the end of the lot, never touching him with the car. He got up and pushed the door closed while I struggled to get out of the car. He smashed my side rear window and disappeared before I could see where he went.
Now, if I been packing, chances are I would have changed the outcome, but not likely for the better for me. I ended up at the emergency room having my wife drive me, and when the cops finally showed
they wanted my medical records including mental health records. I refused, they went away, I ended up with a $1200+ medical bill from the ER and no follow-up from the police. In fact, the first thing they wanted to know was if I had hit the boarder with my car, to which I said: if I wanted to hit him he'd be on a slab and they could then do their chalk outline and clean up the mess at the scene they never bothered to show up at less then 500' from their station downtown.

At times after that, having had my flip house next door robbed sometime while I was away during that summer, and then the above incident occurring on a night out with my wife I thought seriously about getting a handgun but truthfully have more fear of using it when it might come back at me through being sued by some lowlife trespassing and then crying fowl after trying to rob me. Know what I mean?

CM, now there I was trying to get this thread back on the rails when you have to stir it up. Ok, I'll play. First of all I don't carry to make others(other than my family) feel safe. What I am doing, whether on my tractor or walking into Burger King is perfectly legal and none of your business. I am not going to take any heat from the non-carry crowd because this is the last time I will address the issue publicly. I already tried to explain all of this to you earlier, but yep, wasted my time because you didn't even listen to one thing I had to say. You took the thread and made it do a 90 degree turn simply because it bothers you that there are those that carry on their tractor and decided to poke fun. Man do I feel dirty getting down to your level to argue...that was a mistake and it won't happen again.

Yep, and its getting worse.

Well after reading this, I agree with you now that you should never ever carry a concealed firearm.

Jeez guys,
Let's keep it civil, ahem, social.

I've probably saved my own butt more times (4 for sure) than I've ever carried (at least 3 or so IIRC to test the fit of now dusty holster options) by reaching into a pocket, confidently as if for a gun, and bluffing my way thru a situation (white punks on hormones, etc). I've been a CPL holder for a dozen years and live near a notoriously deadly community (not for my age group, btw).

If a fellow TBN member or friend called at odd hours for a jump start or to help with a flat tire I'd likely show up with a HG if either of us thought the circumstances risky. This is where (IMO) a point can be made regarding hand iron. When you can, carry/shoot what you are most practiced with or you might as well throw rocks at that 'coon or coyote. btw: we're NOT all farming the same acreage in the same place, and as for the guys who carry 24/7, that's how you maintain 'situational readiness', as it were, no?.

I rarely see critters when I'm thrashing about on my tractor, but on the golf cart (suitable ATV for 2-tracks) I do come up on the usual pest (feral cat, muskrat ...) and would like at least one proposed tool-holder to accommodate the 10/22 or M1 Carbine, what would be my choice over a HG I'm not good with past 15 yd. Oh, and if I'm out of ammo and charging a rabid coyote swinging a rimfire rifle like a club you guys are welcome to call it an 'assault rifle' if your attitude demands that you post to this thread. ;)

Anyway, I'm guessing that drawing a HG while operating is going to be a two handed affair as usual and unless any potential threat will be faster on the draw, keeping your iron free of dust, chaff, or raindrops oughta be worth sacrificing some ease of access. That said, personal carry kinda makes that moot, doesn't it? ("..you never stand so tall as when you stoop to stomp a varmint..") :D

Count me in agreement with that. People certified and trained to carry concealed are as welcome as any LEO to be near me. Guns are meant to be defensive tools not offensive; but most unlawful gun owners use them offensively.
