OK......posting only so I get email notifications on more posts. This thread is a hoot :cool2: and I don't want to miss a single post. I have a L3940 as well, AND my name is also Fred!!!
Go Fred!

For future reference, you can find a "subscribe to thread" button on the "thread tools" menu. You don't have to post. Although it's more fun. :)

Much more fun to post. Makes me feel like I'm part of the "story".

Labor?!!!
LOL, isn't that the we do for fun?

No I was thinking about the HP and torque boost at what rpms you expect from the retrofit against the out of pocket costs.

Heck I may want to try it myself if in the end it all works out the way you want.

I EXPECT 40 hp at the PTO; 60hp gross intermittent. I have a plan to build a new brush guard that (get this and don't laugh just yet) will serve as an intercooler if I need it. Most of the hot-rodded rear turbo cars you see in magazines don't use intercoolers at all. The length of the exaust running under the car cools the charge as needed. I don't expect to run full tilt and load constantly.

If you do a search of those who took the plunge into turboville most are quite happy except for the ones who used a turbo that was too big. If anything mine looks too small. There's no way I could ever figure out math wise how to size one just right. I barely made it out of high school alive.

I bet nobody here has a clue how much money I have spent on the setup so far, labor not counted or I could have retired already.
Anyone care to take a guess?

Oh and today I pumped another 55 barrel of old fuel out of the ground, it looks and smells great. I know I know .........

Flame on, join the Frednation.

I also need advice on a photo sharing site so I can link pix and delete them at my wish. Photobucket would not let me delete my own photos so I deleted the whole account. Yup over 600 pix POOF! Gone.

I can't delete them from this site either, that's why I won't be posting any here unless I host them somewhere else.

Common rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al the supercharger from Toyota Race Development is a pure bolt on. The ECM (engine control module) MUST be re-flashed to get the correct operating parameters (fuel/timing) for success. One thing I like about Toyota for $55 bux and a $350 OBD cable anyone can go online and do the actual software to the ECM. Gasoline engines are MUCH MUCH harder to tune than diesel. The engine pumps air and the fuel/ignition lead must match the airflow for success and no check engine light, pinging, black smoke etc.

Anyone can buy a tuning program online but very few amateurs can have success. I have tuned a few GM engines after spending $2,000 dollars in education to do so. It is very tricky. I am talking actual tuning here not a tuner that has the program already written. I am NO expert and would never tune engines for the general public. It is quite a specialty.

One reason I chose a bygone Kubota model was because it is a very simple design compared to the 60 series with common rail and piezo injectors. These injectors by the way are quite expensive and must be matched to the ECM with software after the install because of manufacturing differences. I replace quite a few piezo injectors in European cars. Just wait until these new models need fixing down the road...I bet the cost to keep running will be quadruple these early mechanical models.

fRied:)

Fred

This was long before ECMs were standard. It was an old 22R with a carb. It was a Camden supercharger sold by Downey off road. The guy who I bought it from blew up his engine as well. To set the boost you had to change pulleys.

I haven't tried it, but this might help: HOW DO I DELETE T-B-N PHOTOS?

4shorts has deleted pictures, so if this doesn't work, you might check with him, he has helped me with a lot of issues.

I use photobucket. When you bring up a library and hover your mouse over an image a little cog will show up in the right upper corner. Move your mouse over to it (without clicking) and it will bring up a menu list. At the bottom is delete. I never tried deleting a group.

I figure for about $10k tops you should have been able to sell yours and upgrade to a 5740 so hopefully you're not going to go that high.

Fred, I have been using Photobucket for years and have always been able to delete photos?

/ I Still Hate My Tractor #330
Yeah, I delete on Photobucket as well. The only thing I don't like about the site is it won't load a video longer than 10 minutes.

As to current cost. I'm going with $575 Fred. I think I'm high, but haven't gotten a current update on progress so throwing in a few items just in case!!! :)

/ I Still Hate My Tractor #331
Well if this is like the price is right I'm going 576.00 sorry ovrszd.
In reality I'll bet he has a lot less into it.

Dang it!!!! I knew you would do that but thought I was high enough you might go low!!!! Heheheheheheh. I'm with ya, he's less than both of us and we are losers!!! ;)

Just curious ovrszd is your M9540 a cab tractor?

No, open station. I work in the timber too much for a cab. Bought it little over a year ago. Thought it would be easy to find a tractor that sized open station. Who would want one right??? Well turned out that was the problem. No one wanted one, no one stocked one. Had to drive to Chicago, 450 miles to get it. Dealer sold 23 that year, mine was the only open station he sold. Kubota pushed it on him. He thought he'd hafta eat it. :)

As soon as I posted that I deleted the post because stupid me , right there in your avatar was an open station. That is one mean looking tractor. 95hp you sure have plenty of power.

Good to see you joking. I'm a fan and am looking forward to seeing the outcome. As for photo places, I've used Flickr - Photo Sharing but not enough to say how good it is.

We had a turbo installed on our 4020 back in the 80's so it would run the corn chopper better. Exhaust manifold glowed red, but it ran for many years and man was it an awesome tractor.

Fred, guys, I mentioned inter-cooling a while back and recall hearing that compression heating was negligible up to some boost level, it might have been 6 psi or so. I had also wondered about lag possible with a voluminous path from turbo to intake manifold, and my concern there was whether a Kubo's auto power/shift thingie would be respond oddly to that. I like that you plan something as stated. Cheap insurance to keep pistons cool if that pays off?

Philosophically, (moi?) if Fred can gain enough oomph to offset the higher hydro pressure setting/load and the weight of the cab he'll have what most with this model, less equipped if you will, have now. A little more would be nice, since our guy won't want to nurse the thing up every hill when he's 'haulin'. I suspect that temps somewhere will determine his boost & output limits, hoping that he doesn't cook a piston finding what they are.

Y'know, what's making this thread fun is learning what kind of guy Fred is (besides patient, & tolerant of those opposed), and just how well equipped he is to tackle this. Go team!

I've really enjoyed this thread so far and can't wait to see Fred's tractor putting out some boost. Anyway my question is, do all the grand L tractors have the same hydrostatic transmission? Can a 3240 be turned up to a 5740 and the transmission live or is each transmission sized for that tractor?

Late FIL had a M&W turbo put on his IH 686 right after buying it new. Took it from 66 PTO hp to 106hp. It's been Dynoed twice over the years. He used to pull a 2 row NH Silage Cutter/Chopper with it and many other implements. It's still here and looks like new, isn't going anywhere either, nice old iron.

I hope Fred makes this work.
