and since we are getting off on tangents, Tim, how did you get your name Larro, other than rhyming with Darro?

I was in 5th grade when Kennedy was shot. I still had all the old newspaper clippings until about 4 years ago when my old home place burned.

I was in High School, a junior, and in-between English and Biology class. A clueless friend of mine came rushing up to me in the hallway saying, "They got him! They got him!" I was puzzled and asked who. "Kennedy! They got the SOB!" he said. I was stunned. I didn't like Kennedy mostly because of my Aunt who hated everything about him from being Catholic to being rich and from New England. I would later find out that most of my dislikes were misplaced and based on maligned facts. However, at that moment, I had an epiphany of how hate feeds on ignorance as I suddenly detested my friend and his stupid grinning face. It was the beginning of my looking at things a whole lot differently, especially toward those I disagreed with. I realized that John Kennedy was "our" President and a horrible thing for Amerca had just taken place down the road about 35 miles. I don't remember much about my biology class that day except many people were visibly upset, some crying. I knew I would go home and have to eventually listen to glee in my aunt's voice over Kennedy's death. I also knew that I had to tell her how wrong I thought she was. I did just that and am proud of having the guts to stand up to her. And my friend. . . I have a lot of memories of him, but none more vivid than how I hated everything his announcement of "They got him!" represented.

My friend with his own plane tells me any landing you can walk away from is a good one.

I don't understand all the excitement about this. The plane landed, it took off. Pilot envy I think is what's going on here.

Not bloody likely. Some of us still fly, and have yet to land at the wrong airport, even without all of the computer aides. This pilot did not learn using a compass, map, and watch, (with a second hand!). And yes, I've been the freight and passenger jet jockey too, so have no reason to envy.

I hear Capt. Sully was interviewed the other evening on TV, and said the pilot crop coming out today relies on technology, NOT piloting skills. Of course, since I don't watch TV, I am going off of what someone else told me. If this is true, and I suspect it is, the number of problems and casualties will increase, because believe it or not, technology can fail, and does.

Good afternoon FG19. I sort of thought my post would get your propellers spinning. You did say you would fly that thing out of there, that's close to pilot envy in my book.

My Dad used to say if he put a paper sack over my head and turned me around three times, I'd be lost. He wasn't kidding. I can relate.

What do you think will happen to the crew, is the pilot's commercial flying career toast now?

Probably not. I think they need warm bodies with ratings, these days. And with mandatory age 60 retirement for those flying for the airlines, and such, there is going to be a wave of retirement of those that have piloting skills, and those with tech skills will be moving into left seat. I find it more than a little disconcerting.

Who knows what will happen to this crew? Maybe a 2 week leave and more "remedial training". If this is his first "newsworthy" mistake, he'll likely be around after that.

And the bold part is just being a conceited pilot, who thinks she can do it all, or at least, most of it! (Been right, so far!)

I know we are creatures of habit, but habits and inattention are killers in the cockpit. I just wonder if those pilots flew into that smaller airport a lot and made that approach out of habit? I know it took me over a year after I retired to not take the wrong exit off highway 287 to 114 east because that's the way I drove to work for years and years. I think I actually took that exit half a dozen times and then had to turn around. Still, a cockpit has two pilots who are supposed to be paying attention. No doubt something distracted those pilots. Our flight instructors at the training company where I worked always stressed that the number one unwritten checklist item in any situation is to fly the airplane.

I think they must have recieved a waver on runway length for takeoff if it was 1/2 mile shorter than normal. I find it hard to believe an engine fail on takeoff would have let them continue. Maybe there was enough clearway to allow a rejected takeoff. The required runway is always based on an engine fail scenario for multi-engine jets.

I know you could do it!

Interesting info on the right to left seat shift coming up. The passenger airlines have managed to make flying about as attractive as a colon screening. I just have no desire to fly anywhere anymore. I would if I had to, but otherwise I avoid it.

Timothy Eugene Lar^*$#@ was what my mother and father named me. My daddy was named Eugene and went by Gene, but I'm not sure where the Timothy came from. I picked up Larro {the} Darro in the Navy, and it kind of stuck. {Larro is a play on my last name} I can tell how long folks have known me by what name they use. When I was a real little tyke, I was Timbo. Then all through school it was Timmy. In the Navy it was Larro. After Margie and I married and I moved to Blountstown it is Tim. I use Larro as my online ID because most folks around here don't know it, not that I'm hiding or anything. But if you come to Altha hoping to surprise me, you could ask all 50 people in town and none of them would have heard of me, unless you just got lucky and ask the right one or two.

I don't care what you call me, as long as you don't call me late to supper.

Larro

A side note on JFK's death. That Christmas we gave our home room teacher, Mr. Dick, Yes, that's really his name, a rifle exactly like the one that JFK was shot with, sans scope. It was used and we paid $7 for that Italian rifle at the Rexall drug store in Southgate Plaza in the Portlock district of Chesapeake, VA. we wrapped and took it to school. Can you imagine sixth graders bringing a rifle to school nowadays?
