We just bought a new SUV; first year tag and tax = $1050.

My understanding is that when you register a vehicle for the first time you must pay sales tax if you have not already paid it to a instate dealer.

That's the case in Texas alright.

Not only registration is bad. My CPA smarted off about complying with the new barter law where they put a value on the bartered transaction, or something like it. I told her to let the IRS prove the transaction ever occurred!

Dewey,Cheatem, and How are in control of the country for sure...
That has AWAYS been the case..

True here in NYS, and never again, unlike for instance NC, but I hear that they have no property taxes there.

We paid around $60-80 each for a two-year registration for our Honda Fit and Element. Our F350 is a 2001, and we register it as a farm vehicle (as we do our utility trailer) for $2 yearly, but to keep them on the road, we have to carry liability insurance on all of them and get yearly "safety" (BS) inspections, including EPA emissions checks (except the truck, which is exempt as an HD truck.

Still sucks, and if you don't pay for it one way, you pay for it another.

BTW, several national agencies like AAA, and AARP, did an evaluation and declared NYS as one of the top five states for cost of driving, citing poorly maintained roads, salt damage, high fines, insurance rates, and surcharges, and taxes including gas and diesel taxes.

Here in NY, sales tax is paid on the vehicle every time it is sold. Original buyer paid the full shot, then each time it was sold after sales tax is paid again based on the used sale price. All DMV fees have skyrocketed over the past several years. Next week I'll be registering the used dump truck I bought. I figure it's going to cost me over a grand.

Here in Ohio you can get a historical plate. One time fee of $10 for a vehicle over 25 years old. Of course, you are not supposed to use it as an every day driver. They stipulate "club use" or to and from auto shows, but I have seen some severe bending of that rule.

There used to be a guy around here that bought those tags for all of his non-moving treasures parked in his front yard.
