I just ordered a wildkat grapple and need to run some lines from the rear remote up to the front. I want to order everything I need to make this work but don't know what that is exactly. I bought the grapple with no quick couplers. I'm confused about what couplers to order and what size I need. I know many of you have a similar setup so can you please share with me what you had to buy to make this work?

If you have a hydraulic shop nearby, I'd take it to them to have it done.

I'd ask them to run hard lines along the tractor frame and also along the loader arms. Obviously need a quick connect at the remote so you can use the remote for something else. Also need a quick connect at the end of the loader arm so you can easily remove the grapple. And also very nice to have a quick connect between to loader and tractor frame in case you need to remove the loader.

That's how mine has been plumbed and it looks great and works well.

Wish I could just take it to the shop but they can't get to it for a while and I'd like to use my grapple before then. I don't live on my farm property and only get to spend a limited amount of time there so I want be able to get some projects done while I'm there next week. I know that I need to get some 3/8 lines in the proper length but not sure which connectors to buy that will plug into the rear remotes and which ones I need at the front for the connection to the grapple. That bit of info will help me a lot.

1/2 inch Pioneer Ag connectors.

Get you hoses here
Surplus Center

Get your connectors here.
ISO 5675 Agricultural Hydraulic Quick Couplers

Use a small garden hose, or piece of cable to "route" the hoses like you want them. Dont forget to have a set of connectors in the middle so the loader can come off. Take off the garden hose or other cable, and measure it to get your lengths to order.. Dont forget the right angle adaptors on the back going into the 1/2 inch AG connectors. be sure to get some dust covers. Figure out what you want to do on the torque tube, In other words are they going to be rigid mounted or left loose. Suggest you make the ones on the torque tube of the loader, both make and female so you can plug the corresponding male and female into each other on the grapple. Good luck.. get back with me if you need help.

Ok, now my question is will the 3/8 hose connect directly to the 1/2 ag coupler or will some type of adapter be required?

I have 1/2 lines, you would use 3/8 Ag. You would need a connection from the hose to your fitting. Call the Supplier that James posted and find out everything you need to know. I bought mine from MIE.

If it Had it to do over, I would have ordered 3/8 instead of 1/2 hoses. Maybe JIC fittings instead of NPT.

Why? Cost?

Will the 3/8 ag connectors fit the rear connectors on my tractor?

You will need adaptors and which ones depending on if you use the JIC or the NPT threads on the hoses. I used the NPT. but some complained that the NPT rely on thread deformation to seal. The JIC are a more sophisticated coupler which seal on a 37 degree cone surface.

No. they will be half inch.. the only reason I might suggest the 3/8 hoses is because the 1/2 inch are stiffer and larger, more like a garden hose.. pretty big and stiff.. But still doable. and that is what I used, It made all the fittings easy.. 1/2 NPT hoses go right into 1/2 inch AG connectors set up for 1/2 inch NPT. so it was all easy no adaptors needed. Except for the right angles just to make the hoses lay easier rather than plugging straight in and having a loop. If you use the NPT hoses Do NOT use hardware store adaptors. Use only hydraulic fittings.. the hardware store ones are rated for 300 PSI the hydraulic ones for 4000.

No. stiffness and easier to work with, but the 1/2 werent that bad. The 3/8 are good for about 7 GPM, and the 1/2 is good for at least 10GPM or so. Some have also used even 1/4 for grapple use as they want some restriction and lower flow rates to prevent the grapple lid from closing so fast. It takes longer for a hydraulic cylinder to fill when it is fed by a smaller hose vs a larger hose all other being equal. But I have had no problem running off of the rear remote as you can just "feather the valve" If you open the valve all the way, the lid does close with a bang! But it is not really a problem.

I also ran 1/2 inch lines. Maybe 3/8 flow reduction would equal less force? I've noticed my grapple will crush the blazes out of some trees.

Not less force, just longer time to fill the cylinder. Example, place your thumb over a garden hose with 60psi with the valve full open, it is hard to keep your thumb on the opening of the hose, it wants to dislodge your thumb with the 60 lbs of pressure. Now close the valve to just a slight drip, you can easily put your thumb over the hose at first. but wait several minutes. the pressure just keeps building and building to the 60 lbs. if you release some pressure the volume is so low it will take minutes more to build to 60 lbs again, but it will. Low volume of flow is still the same potential pressure, as high volume of flow. It just takes a lot longer to build the pressure. There is no real pressure in a garden hose or a hydraulic hose for that matter, except a little that is generated by the friction of the fluid being resisted by flowing along the hose walls. The pressure in either hose builds when you restrict that flow up to the maximum that the pump can deliver before going into relief.

Good points.

I enjoy reading your posts - always well articulated and informative. I'm thinking you need to change your handle to "Professor k0ua" :)

My daughter calls me "Mr Wizard" :) I do get a little verbose at times.:D but I do like to learn things, and one of the best way to learn things is to experience them and then try to tell others.. If you can teach others, you have to try to understand things yourself.. I try, and often fail, but I try.
