2013 Tundra vs 2013 Ford

Its gets regular maintenance.

Just various things are failing. Much of it has failed before and this is its second replacement. Bad design from the factory. Many problems Im having are very common on the ford forums.

This is the second time for fixing leaky exhaust manifolds. I probably should have bought new headers last time, the factory ones are garbage and warp, but it wasnt in the budget. Now its time to pay the piper. Known issue.

This is also the second rear end. First one was near the end of warranty. I think they just rebuilt it with new internals. Who knows if they set it up right? But they are known for eating pinion bearings, and thats what I have to fix now. Known issue.

Driveshaft (rear) is out of balance because ford used a ****** way of mounting the weights to an UNPAINTED! driveshaft. Rust gets behind the weights and pops them off. Another known issue.

Front driveshaft slip is siezed. Driveshaft cant telescope. Im pretty sure the Ujoints are shot too, but cant take driveshaft out to confirm. Will likely have to destroy the driveshaft to get it out.

Bearings in xfer case are in need of replacement. Play on rear output shaft.

Muffler, leaks. This is a normal wear item. Not fords fault.

Rockers etc. They were "repaired" while still under warranty for surface rust. Job was not well done. Now I have to completely replace the rockers. Known issue. Water leaks in the rear 3rd brakelight and takes out the rockers from the inside. Ford didnt seal the light correct.

Drivers seat needs replacement. Leather wore through and tore. Leather was not tough enough.

At least one COP is shot.

Thats about it off the top of my head lol.

And yes it gets lousy mileage on top of all that;)

So no head gasket, alternator, PCV hoses, EGR valve and DPFE sensor, shackles rotted off, smoked limited slip clutches, bad torque converter, blend door or leaking ac compressor?

You could have done a lot worse! Ford seemed to either build great trucks or absolute trash. And I mean trash. There didn't seem to be any in between.

Wow. What year is this truck? Miles?

Late 2003. Around 175000kms (110,000 miles) give or take.

Before anyone says "its an old truck, what do you expect", there have been nothing but problems since it was new, this isnt a recent thing. Even when it was under warranty, ford wouldnt cover a lot of issues. Things like the 4wd not disengaging. Rust on the bumpers and running boards etc, coil packs.

They did do the trans at around 2 years. As I said, rear end was done too. The thing has a history of component failures dating back to about 6 months after it left the lot. It was bought new.

Sounds like a lot of the problems are related to driving in salt.

Hard to say. Salt is an issue for sure, but Ive had issues right from when it was new, before it even saw its first bit of salt. Salt wouldnt damage the internals of the trans. Or the bearings in the rear end.

Ford liked to hide behind the excuse of "Caused by environmental conditions" for just about everything. If theyre going to sell in this market, the vehicle must have proper rust protection in place. If they build a vehicle for Arizona, of course it will have issues in the North East. Bad design.

I have a 95.5 Tacoma that has seen the same environment and it has had no where the issues that the newer ford has. Not even close! Right now its in my barn having a 8" hole in the floor patched, but that is the very first issue that truck has had.

I would think salt is a lot like sand- gets in the tightest places, wreaking havoc on bearings and moving parts. I do not live in a sandy or salty enviroment, this is just a thought. Either way, that is a lot of issues you have.

My 2000 Tundra with 150k miles had a rusty frame. The rockers, doors, and almost everything else is fine. The front lower corners of the bed have lost the paint and are rusty but the metal is still solid. Other than that it's been routine maintenance (timing belt, front brakes, muffler). Some vehicles just seam to have parts that do poorly with salt. I haven't even replaced the tranny fluid yet since it's still like new.

I must have had all great ones along with my family and friends. We have none of these issues. My buddy did just have to replace a alternator on a 2001 last weeked. Junk....

I'm not saying that they are all like that at all. Some were great, some not. My in-laws have 2 7.3 PSD trucks. One has been great with ~200k, while the other has been terrible. Just about everything that can go wrong, has.

You've stated numerous times that your Fords have been great while your GM and Dodge trucks have been junk. Many others have had the opposite experience. You have to understand that there is some middle ground.

I've worked on some vehicles that were so bad they would scare off even the most die hard of fans.
