I have an MF 135 Gas, 1972 that I purchased this Spring. I don't notice the hydraulics having an issue when bush hogging or using the grader blade. However, when I park the tractor if I have the equipment up, then when I come back it will be down. I don't see any visible leaks that would indicate it is losing hydraulic fluid, however, I am new to hydraulics and tractors in general so maybe I am missing something. Shouldn't the implement stay in position even when the tractor is shut off? Where do I start in my troubleshooting?

Thanks,
Stuart

Leak down is common on those. When you start the machine it should go right back where it was.

That is exactly what happens, so my questions are

  1. Why does this happen?
  2. Should I be concerned?
  3. How do I fix?

Thanks,
Stuart

How long does it take to leak down?

if it doesn't leak down fast.. no need to fix.

IE. with a load.. if it holds up for 5m without leaking down.. I'd live with it.

Why does it happen. internal leaks at the hyd piston seal usually...though there are other places a leak could be. relief.. check valve.. etc.

concerned? If it leaks down fast.. then yes.. it's a concern and should be fixed. Slow? not so much. Most will leak down given time. ... ps it's an internal leak not external.

That's how it should work as the lift cover piston has cast iron rings, the gaps leak oil in normal use. They were like that since new.

I wonder if someone has engineered an aftermarket solution?

an aftermarket soloution for a correctly working antique?

I've seen pistons that use orings.. .. but other than that. the internal cyl/piston is a tried and true design for 3pt lift.

What I am hearing is "Don't worry about it". ;)

I wanted to check though just didn't want it leaking into something else and causing a problem there, but it sounds like there isn't anything to really worry about so that is good.

Thanks!
