A few of you may know I've been trying to get a bush hogging service started. Last week I had a nice 35 - 40 acre job about 18 miles from home. I moved the tractor and mower on Thursday evening and put in about 10 hours overall on Friday. Just as I was getting done the owner shows up and wants just a little more mowing done. The area in question was a little hard to get to and he promised there were no obstacles hiding in the 8' tall Polkweeds, briars and Locust sprouts. I was tired and ready to go home but I went ahead and started to mow the area against my better judgement.

Like I said the weeds were high and I had trouble believing that there were no hidden obstacles. I devised a plan to back the mower slowly through the mess hoping to find any rocks or stumps with the mowers 6 tires before the blades did. It's a tactic that's worked well before.

All was well for the first little bit as the tractor crept backward while straining my torso to see behind me. First pass done, second pass no problem. I had to stop once and inform the owner he was standing entirely too close and needed to move. On the third pass backwards it finally happened, disaster... Not 10 feet from where I had started the bush hog suddenly fell into a hole. Not a little hole, a big one. So deep the deck hit the ground and the blades contact the dirt, killing the engine before I can stop the PTO. I rush to start the engine to see if I can free myself, no dice. The wheels spin and it sits still. I dismount to see how big the hole really is, the weeds are so thick you couldn't even tell there was a hole.

"What do we do now?" the owner asked. "Nothing" I said, " I'll deal with this later."

It rained off and on all weekend. Not good weather for extracting a stuck machine. So it remained there as I pondered my options.

Today I went back with a machete to clear the weeds enough to see what I'm up against. "WOW!", "Holy Sh*t!", " I'm lucky I didn't hit the hole with one tire of the tractor!" and a few other things came to mind.

So here is my stupid problem. What we have is a sink hole 12 or so feet deep with an opening about 5'x8' and nearly vertical sides. It opens up on one side and goes much deeper UNDER the tractor.

Turn the tractor around and use the FEL to fill the whole.

Get a bigger tractor in there to help pull it out and charge the landowner for it.

Take it easy so you don't do a bunch of damage. You might want to secure a rope nearby so if someone falls in, they can get out..

Unhitch the mower, remove the tractor from the danger zone, pull the mower out with a chain, put the owner in the hole, and fill it. :)

If you unhitch it you may be looking for an excavator to get it out of that hole. Don't mess with it till you get help.

Unhook it, chain it up and lift it out with the FEL. BTW, I were you, my hourly price just tripled.

I was told the same thing once ( nothing in the field)... 5 minutes later I found a well head the hard way!

If you price a field to bush hog without walking it first your due whatever happens to you , Hopefully after the first time you learn what not to do !!

It's easy to give him krap when its not your tractor and mower sitting on top of a sink hole.

Before you damage your equipment, call a wrecker and have him pull you out while you are also slowly easing forwards to pull the rotary cutter from the hole. You have a lot of dead weight hanging in that hole. I would not wait to long. One good rain could cause the cutter to pull the tractor backwards.

Holy cow!.. yes get that wrecker, and recover your equipment, and put it in on the owners bill. I would get going pretty quick, sinkholes have been known to grow. Man you are lucky you didn't get pulled into the darn thing.

As I mentioned before the area is hard to get to and on top of that its a clay mud pit. No truck is making it in there.

I'll be taking another m9540, plenty of chains and my camera when I go back.

The reason for this forum is to share ideas and get/give advice when needed.

You also get entertained by fools now and then.

DT86; Thank you for sharing what happened. maybe others can/will learn from it. Good luck getting everything out and running again.

Dt you may need a little more pull if the hole starts to give under your tractor. Find a bigger one.

It might be smart to not be on your tractor when its pulled out. Hook up, let big tractor or wrecker hold it. Tie the steering wheel and put it in neutral.

I looked over a couple of your photo's. I would see if you can put the wings down and see if it would lift the middle of your mower up some, so you can clear the ridge with the middle tires. If your wings are set to "float", meaning follow the contour of the land my plan won't work. But if you could plumb the wings to hold the position you put them in this might work.

Another idea might be, put the wings down and lift the middle tires up with a $80 high lift jack and see if the tractor can snatch the mower to clear the ridge of the hole.

No way you could have seen that hole but always go slow on new ground because the faster you go, the deeper in the s%$# you go. Good Luck.

This is not for the feint hearted. This is what I would do. Place two six by sixes or logs inline under the batwings of the mower. Lower the wings and try to move forward. If no movement, disconnect from the tractor and get it out of the way and pull the mower away from the hole with a chain or the FEL if you dare.
Rain softening the earth under the tractor may be a problem.
Industrial puker power may be needed for this rescue.

Dt I my opinion you are lucky that you didn't walk the field.

Heavy he doesn't have anything to support a jack. I was thinking it would be a good idea to let the wings down to spread the weight out though.
If he messes with it too much he could have the tractor in the hole.
