Diesel Engine Oil

I plan to use the Castrol Edge in my 1025 because it's the only xw30 oil that I can get that's diesel rated. Every other diesel rated oils available around here (and even in Ohio where I checked some) are xxw40 oils. My temperature chart shows I don't need a 30w, and I want to save fuel by using xw30. Going to 0w20 in my Tacoma has really improved the fuel mileage on it.

Amsoil (I don't sell the stuff) has a CJ-4 10W30, and a pre-emission 10w30 and 5w30. I don't remember the spec you need for that engine.

I've used Delvac1 (more or less TDT) - I've liked it and all the Mobil products I've used in the past. If my cash flow was stronger at the moment, I'd probably buy more than I do - up Nord here, real sales on Mobil seem rare, at least in the stores I frequent.

Getting ready for 50 hour initial oil change (flush the break-in machining), couldn't find 10W-30 CG+ mineral oil so did what everybody else does - went with 15W-40 until winter, then change to synthetic. Ended up with Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40.......overkill for a mechanically-injected, nonturbocharged, IDI diesel engine, but what the hey. And only needed 3 quarts, not a 5 gallon pail.

Winter changeover will be Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5W-40, for low temperature pumpability.

An Industrial Distributor in Etobicoke. Been a while, so I can't remember the name..... I think I tracked them down through the Mobil site back then. Went looking now... pretty sure it was Noco. Bought a case of 4L jugs (x4) - can't remember if that was the minimum purchase, or I just wanted that much.

Good plan - 5W40 is nice for winter, and minimizes aux heating requirements.

Rotella makes a blend 10w-30 that I find to be a good quality.

Thanks, Tom - I was looking for pure mineral oil as this is a short run prior to changing over to synthetic for winter. I hate to think about it, but that's only 3 months away!

In oil industry parlance, "pure mineral oil" means base oil stocks from refined crude oil instead of synthetic or synthetic blends - not mineral oil you buy at the pharmacy.

Anway, I don't use expensive synthetic oil as a short hour flushing agent - that's what mineral oils are for.

thanks, sure does. Just never heard the term.
I've flushed with inexpensive oil also before the good stuff goes in.
We are told over and over they are compatible so hopefully the left over
coating does not affect the chemistry of the final mix.

Welcome, daugen. Yes, mineral oil and PAO synthetic oil (poly alpha olefin) are completely compatible. They are both long chain hydrocarbons, mineral being refined (boiled) and synthetic being chemically constructed (hence their purity).

There are some synthetic oils that are not compatible - typically, diesters such as jet engine oil, etc. There are even a few of them for automotive, but none of the popular brands we are exposed to except for i think some Amsoil lines.

All AMSOIL engine oils are PAO based. Some their compressor oils are diester.

I've never flushed with anything before converting to synthetic. Did it on an old Gravely, our old 240D Benz, a 1996 Tacoma and a 1997 VW Cabrio and a couple lawn mowers and generator. PAO's are just straight chain hydrocarbons with a few side chains to lower their pour points. Most "mineral" or "dino" oils are the same straight chain hydrocarbons. They just happen to have ppm levels of some of the bad stuff that PAOs don't.

True, you may not get the full effects (lower fuel consumption, etc) of the PAO until about the 3rd oil change if you don't flush, but I think you'd have to flush a couple of times. Is it worth it?

The Gravely, for instance, was using oil until its 3rd change on synthetic. It actually quit using oil. Never have had a problem with high oil consumption when switching to synthetics that some have mentioned hearing about.

I worked for 31 years in lube oil industry with Exxon. We knew from our research that the synthetics were the best. So, when Exxon and Mobil merged I could finally switch to Mobil 1 without being a traitor. Cannot find (except at exorbitant prices) Mobil 1 ESP for our Jetta TDI though. Have to buy the Castrol Edge from the dealer. Castrol used to never make a drop of oil. They just marketed it after blending and buying from others. Wonder if Castrol Edge isn't just blended Mobil 1 ESP?

Hey, RalphVa! We are ex-patriots......I worked for Mobil Oil Corp. in Industrial Lubes as a Field Engineer.

I "flush" one oil change on new engines just to clean out the higher engine wear particles from initial running before I change to synthetic. It is more a function of rapid changeout of oil filters than the oil itself, but obviously the higher price for synthetics does not lend them for use as short term change interval oils.

Been using Mobil 1 & Delvac 1 engine oils for 26 year now......engines so clean you can eat off of 'em, not to mention much easier starting in the winters up here in the north country. Also they don't varnish (oxidize) at high temps like mineral oils do.
