The addiction is very strong. It's going on seven years since I quit, and it was the toughest thing I ever did.

2 and a half years for me, New Years eve.
Had a 2 cig relapse when my mother passed away 2 months later, have not had any desire since
Best thing I ever did.

Do a search on "fire started by cigarette", and see how many hits you get. According to FEMA, 1000 people die every year from this type of fire.

Maybe a small bucket of water would be better for the butts

Having had to clean out cigarette urns that had wet butts in them, I would NOT recommend this. Took me 3 days to get the stench out of my hands.

Wow. Glad you were able to get the fire out quickly. You guys dodged a real catastrophe there. I hope this along with the other reasons cited provides an incentive for your girlfriend to quit.

She has no inclination to quit. She quit for about three years while she was pregnant and breastfeeding our son, but she just got back into it. You know how it is. Nobody quits before they're ready.

The nicotine water is also poisonous. The workaround is to use a soda bottle half full of water, then just cap it and toss it when it's full.

Here's my solution for guests smoking on the porch ...

It's worked for 12 years ... Empty metal paint can with a 3/8 hole in the top. Just put the lit butt in the top. Easy to empty too.
