Anyone else having hydraulic problems with a 5M series? My tractor is a 2010 model with 421 hours on it.
When I first start up, I have zero hydraulics. It's a PowerReverser transmission, so it won't move either. The only way I can get it started working is to crank it and let it idle a few minutes, then race the engine. Once it starts working, it will keep working as long as it's running. If I kill it for even 30 minutes, it looses its prime and I have to start over. I'm afraid that I may ruin the hydraulic pump if this keeps up.

I called the dealer and spoke with the service manager. I did everything he told me to do: change fluid and filter and check all the hydraulic connections. Same thing.
I'm right in the middle of hay season and I really need this tractor to work.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I posted this in the JD Owning/Operating forum, but only have one other 5M owner reporting the same problem. Here's a link to that thread: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/john-deere-owning-operating/283098-question-about-hydraulics-5m.html His problem turned out to be the "manifold" that the pump and filter mount to.

did you use a jd filter?

does you tractor have a screen or strainer in the transmission?

I didn't locate a sump screen in JDparts,com.

Sounds as if you have a suction leak in the trans lube pump.

Jim,
That's what AKfish suggested. That was his problem. (so far, he's the only other 5M owner who's had this problem) He said it was the manifold (part #1) on your diagram.
My service manager just keeps saying that "nobody else has reported any trouble" like mine. AKfish sent me the name and phone number of his service manager. I gave that to my guy, but nothing yet.
What I was hoping for is, if other 5M owners have had similar problems, we might could establish a pattern and JD would pick up the tab for the repair. My tractor is about 7 months out of warranty. AKfish said that they had to change his hydraulic pump too, because the suction leak on the manifold had damaged the pump.
I'm paying over $1000 per month note on this tractor, and I really don't want to pay a big repair bill on top of that.

Are you sure the tractor is a 2010 model? There was a similar problem for 5M's built before June 19, 2009. Have your dealer check your build date and also have him check solution 83658. If the problem was documented before warranty ran out, you have a good case for having it replaced. There was a problem with some of the early pumps.

Thanks for that info. I will pass it along to the service manager.

Quick update:
Just spoke with the service manager at the selling dealership. He has brought it to the attention of the factory representative, and JD has agreed to cover the repair IF the manifold is indeed defective. If not, the bill is on me. Either way, looks like I'll have to make an appointment and take it in next week. I need to get it fixed.

Good luck. For what theses tractors cost they should cover it no problem, but then it doesn't seem to always work that way.

You know it.

I'll find out soon enough. Plan on calling the service manager tomorrow and take it in this week. Had to finish my hay up first, and I did that yesterday. I can be without that tractor a few days now.

Here's the latest. I talked to the service manager today. He said they were waiting on one small part to finish it up. Should be done tomorrow. They changed the hydraulic manifold and the pump. (pump was worn out after only 450 hours!) He's waiting on the JD factory rep to call him back on it. I'm hoping JD picks up the tab for the repair bill. I'll post the "rest of the story" as soon as I find out what it is. :D

Best of luck to you! I can't imagine them leaving you holding the tab with so few hours.

That's what I'm thinking too.

OK, the tractor is home.
Replaced hydraulic pump and manifold. (plus oil, several gaskets, one hydraulic line, etc)
Total repair bill was over $2600. Still haven't heard from the JD factory rep as to how much of it I'll have to pay.

That's a pretty good kick in the butt! My service manager hasn't heard from your guys... I have to believe that there's more to this story than is apparent from the number of response's from other 5M owner's. 450 hours and a catastrophic hydraulic system failure....

The only way that kind of thing happens is -- 1.) there was a huge hyd leak and nobody replaced the fluid and used the tractor; or 2.) the hyd manifold was defective! (Based on previous information - I think I know what the problem was.)

Of course; during the repairs on my 5075M the shop foreman had some frustration tracking down a new manifold from Deere -- they told me that there were failures/design problems on other M's and that there was a shortage of new units.

Be very interested to hear how corporate JD handles this repair...

We took delivery of our 5085 M in march I think, pretty sure it's pushing 450 hours or so now. Better check tomorrow! Solid machine so far, really like it. I'm eager to hear how your situation turns out, and will keep an eye on the hydro system. Sorry to hear about your problems and being down a machine. That would be a huge deal for us this time of year, reflected in the hours we've put on it in the last few months.
