David, when I was working in my Dad's service station, we had a regular customer who was a fairly young widow with 2 small boys. She was driving an old worn out 6-cylinder manual transmission Chevrolet. And then one day she showed up in a brand new 1958 Chevrolet Nomad wagon. Her father-in-law had taken her to a Chevrolet dealership and told her to just pick out the one she wanted, and he'd pay for it. She picked that station wagon sitting on the showroom floor. When I raised the hood, I had to ask, "Why in the world did you pick this one?" She said, "What do you mean" and I told her I couldn't imagine her doing any hotrodding, so why get a car with a big V-8 and two 4-bbl carburetors. She had no idea what she had gotten. So it wasn't long until she was very unhappy with the gas mileage, went back to the dealer, and learned it would be expensive to change to a single carburetor and even then she would not be happy with the gas mileage compared to her old 6-cylinder Chevy.

Bird, great story. And shame on the salesman who sold that hog to her. I had, for a while, until I defied the laws of physics, ahem..., a 58 Impala with a 348 and got 8 miles to the gallon. I can't imagine what that thing was like with twin four barrels.

and is it nears dinner time, may I wish you all a good evening. Mine sure will be, my honey is home. :dance1:Not without serious issues, and a very bleak future, but home is home. You all have kept me company through this and I am sincerely grateful.

64 and raining again. With all the reminiscing of first cars have to admit there are several nice vehicles on the post. My first car was a 65 Buick GS with a 455, but the best was a 64 Chevy impala with the 283, lots of room in that car!!! My father caught me going just a little to fast with the GS traded for the 283.

69 humid degrees this morning with heavy rain by this afternoon and tonight. Daugen you are truly blessed, happy for you wife is coming home. In the early 70s had a Ford Fairlane 1966 with a 390 , 4 spd hurst shifter. Lots of fun back in the day used to eat small block mustangs and Plymouths for breakfast. Really enjoyed talking to Sam yesterday. There are some great people here on TBN. Morning all

Anything with the 390 was good, and would run forever. Mine just sucked the fuel, was it's only downside. Of course, fuel *used* to not be as expensive!

well we got 2" of rain today so i made my gas run. on my way out i noticed the water running across the road everywhere well i checked a few places and the ditch line was full of dirt so the water had no where else to go. so on my way back from town i stoped by the dot shop and and ask a guy there witch i knew, when they might be gonna clean out the ditch lines so the water would have a place to run. you ain't gonna belive this, he said sam we don't clean out the ditches any more i said your kidding he said no i'm not. now if they go to clean out the ditches the EPA has to be present and test what comes out of the ditch and tell them where they can dump it. so the extra time that is involved the dot decided not to do it any more. needless to say i was mad when i left where does the bs stop. everyone have a good evening.

How would any fair lady with so few years on this earth as yourself ever know what fuel prices "used" to be? Surely, it was some older person that told you about those days long ago.;)
