Could someone enlighten me about the E series engines. The 5083E, 5093E and the 5101E engines all have the same displacement. I'm assuming the differences are in the injection and ignition systems with the larger horsepower engine presumably being subject to higher compression and thus more stress. How does this play out as far as service and durability? Will the 5101 last as long and be as trouble-free as, say, the 5083? I also wonder what the differences are in fuel consumption. Thank you.

I think the differences in HP output is controlled by inj pump and injectors. Both tractors are rated at 2400 rpm's and are tier ll.

This question is the very reason I bought a 5093E rather than a 101E. I figured over the course of 15 or 20 years the extra stress the 101 would have to go through to get more horsepower out of the same block and head would cost me plenty.

The very same block (4.5l) is used in the 6000 series as well. I haven't reviewed all the latest horsepower offering's for that engine but I believe it's very likely in the 135hp range at least. So, generating 101hp is not likely gonna result in a shortened duty-life for that engine.

Ok then how about I saved $3k by buying the 93 versus the 101? :D

That's a REAL good reason...to buy the lower Hp engine! But, you don't have any real reason to worry that another 8hp is gonna shorten the life of the engine. Did some checking on the 4.5l in the 6000 series tractors and it's available in a 140Hp configuration.

Good, strong engine!

Yeah I figured that anything I wanted to do with a 101 could also be done with a 93. It was pretty easy to justify the jump from the 5083 to the 5093 but I couldn't make that same case for switching to the 101.
I sure appreciate all the advice you gave me while I was trying to make up my mind. Due to some financial issues I had hoped to be able to buy my new tractor in July or August. When Deere announced they were no longer making T3 tractors and my dealer's inventory of T3 5093's dropped to one unit I grabbed that last one. I didn't want a T4 tractor since I know they will cost more to service and I have doubts about the reliability of the T4 parts.
They are prepping it now and should deliver it near the end of the month.

Actually in a generator power unit application, that same engine can be as high as 197 hp. Check it out here: PowerTech E 4.5L Gen-Set Diesel Engine 147 kW (197 hp) from John Deere
