Pto won't stay engaged

Thank you CF. I'm not that familiar with tractors. What is a detent spring? Excuse my ignorance!

Worn shifter fork or detent spring is the first things I'd look at.

It stays engaged only when I hold down the clutch lever with my foot. I know it's an old tractor, and I recently inherited it with my new home, but I'd love to keep this thing running well.

go to the tractor... with machine off, grab the pto stub and see if there is any thrust play. ie. can you pull the stub out or push it in any?

if so.. it will walk the pto out of engagement and wear the splined coupler and the pto shaft.

it COULD be a bad detent or worn fork.. and will produce the same results.

i'd check the pto shaft first however.
