Weather report. How cold?

It was 13 when I got up this morning. Always hate the local TV weather with their thermometers in the cities. They were complaining about the 20 degrees in town, just a few miles away. It's not too bad, my little Irish woodstove is hot and the geo heat pump does the rest. No backup heat unless it goes below 0.

Cold is so related to one's expectations. I've been in the Dakotas in winter, and people understand, prepare and live with subzero routinely. Here, below the Mason Dixon Line, it's not expected. But we deal pretty good with the summer heat.

All in all, I'm just glad I got to live in an era where we have central heat/cooling, insulation, and machines that run just fine in extreme conditions.

Ain't it the truth. We get around zero here fairly often, sometimes below zero. The average daily low this time of year is 4*F, or used to be. But to me, -30*F to -40* is a whole 'nother kind of cold that I wouldn't be used to at all.

27F this morning....34F right now. Roofs are covered with ice......clear skies....suppose to see some rain tomorrow which will warm things up to low to mid 40's.

It was 65F on Saturday and I rode the motorbike to dinner after a hike under cloudless skies. Then the temperature started to drop, and now it is 17F with an inch of snow on the ground. This is normal for Missouri.

Ten days ago a man hiking with his two sons and their dog got caught by heavy rain, a sudden temperature drop, and approaching nightfall on what is otherwise a moderate section of the Ozark Trail. Only the dog survived:

Update: This morning was even colder than yesterday. It was a solid -38f on the way to work this morning, with a high of -13f. The Cummins with conventional motor oil fired right up. Of course, I had it plugged in... I'm not totally dim! I'm also running a winter blend fuel instead of straight No.1. with Power Service additive (white bottle) and so far, no gelling problems.

Back then, for carbed gas vehicles I always had a can of Quick Start (ether) around. At the time, the diesels I drove were used only in the Summer.

-38 DANG THAT IS COLD!!!! Only 7 above this morning going to work guessing it dropped to 3 or 4 at day light. Now it's 2 above calling for 0, I think the weather man might miss this one. Saying wind chill -15 -- -25 so just about all schools on 2 hr delay for tomorrow. Tomorrow evening calling for 3-4" of snow and maybe more on Fri..

Was 16F degrees here today. 8*F now...low of 2F tonight. Tomorrow's Hi 13*F

The January I logged off my land 27 years ago the pump on the Cat skidder cracked and we had to do a field R&R. It was -15F that day.

Coldest tempeture for me that I can recall has been -25*F
