Weather report. How cold?

Cold snap all across the nation! Up here on the Minnesota/Manitoba border we had a "brisk" -32F this morning, with more cold to follow all week. Wind chill values are estimated to be near -47! This pic was taken from inside my truck on the way to work. It was a quiet country road, so I had the luxury of being able to stop for a moment and snap the picture with no fear of any traffic.

What's it like where you live? Everybody chime in.

Joe

Hey neigbour.... greetings from Badger.
same temps here (-40) and more colder tonight forecast.
With the windstorm last fall I was able to put up 16 cords of wood. At these temps I am VERY thankful for having the extra available just in case this continues.

Should have enough seasoned from year before but just in case looking out the window at the extra 16 makes me feel a little safer.

Finally had chance to test winter diesel with PS anti gel at -40 and happy to say no gelling.

Cheers

10*F, on its way to around zero overnight. The forecast has added some warmth to our cold snap, now they are saying around -14*F is about as cold as it will get Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Badger? I'm on Minnesota Hill. We ARE neighbors! It's supposed to get colder tonight. We'll see how well the local winter blend is in the morning when I fire up the Cummins for work.

Keep warm!

We have zero here this morning with negative nine degree wind chill in southeast Michigan. Should be making some ice so we can fish the hard water finally.

4˚ above zero here this morning. Be careful out there everyone as this is seriously cold weather.

Tom, sorry to hear of your aunt. You have my deepest sympathy. My father had Alzheimer's before he passed away from cancer. Horrific disease.

Only four below this morning but the forcast calls for much colder tonight. The wind was blowing yesterday and the snow conditions were just right for snow roses to form. It looks like the wind faries were having a snow ball fight in my daughters fields and some of them are a foot tall. The weatherman said it was the first time in thirty years with those conditions. I can't say he is wrong as I don't remember the last time I saw them.

Wow. I have never heard or seen snow roses.....

Can you spray them with red food coloring, insert a stick, and give it to the wifey?:laughing::laughing:

Dmccarty;I was in Ky the winter of '77-'78. Kids got out of school for Christmas break, 21 or 22 of December and didn't go back to school till Feb. It's in the low teens now, wind 10-15. I have a neighbor that calls it the "Wind Chill Factory".......he don't get out much.

I think it was 77 that the teachers went out on strike too. I remember two years of really cold weather, heavy snow, frozen rivers and creeks with lots of missed school. The year of the teacher strike we had to go to school well into the summer and we had an extra hour in class each day. Really stunk. An extra hour a day does not sound like much but it really wore us down and it worked out to an extra 10 minutes per class which was pretty useless.

We used to live near a creek and I remember it freezing up a few times. We used to go walk that creek on the ice. We would fall through sometimes, the creek was not deep but we could be wet from the thigh down. It really was cold when the water went over the tops of our boots. :laughing::laughing: By the time we got cold enough to go home, the jeans would be frozen and your legs would be red. We would take off the cold wet clothes, warm up and go back outside. Crazy kids. :D:D:D Tis a wonder we did not get frost bite.

Later,
Dan

It was 13 when I got up this morning. Always hate the local TV weather with their thermometers in the cities. They were complaining about the 20 degrees in town, just a few miles away. It's not too bad, my little Irish woodstove is hot and the geo heat pump does the rest. No backup heat unless it goes below 0.

Cold is so related to one's expectations. I've been in the Dakotas in winter, and people understand, prepare and live with subzero routinely. Here, below the Mason Dixon Line, it's not expected. But we deal pretty good with the summer heat.

All in all, I'm just glad I got to live in an era where we have central heat/cooling, insulation, and machines that run just fine in extreme conditions.

-4 F here this morning, with little to no wind (for now). My stupid diesel fuel gelled (had ~20% bio mix) just one mile shy of getting to work. Have to go out now and try to get her cleared out and re-started.

Just crossing zero. Great.

8*f here in Niagara the ice grapes are being harvested and supposed to be a vintage harvest

Most of those snow roses were being blown up hill on fields with a slope to the southwest. Now think how hard it is to roll a snowman snow ball once it gets some size to it then imagine the good stiff breeze it takes to blow a chicken sized snow rose along up grade. One thing the air here isn't the least bit stale.

Wishing you a speedy recovery on the gelling..... never fun to work on when it's this cold.

Around 0F (Central Ontario, Canada), getting a bit colder this week..... Not really Canuck cold, but we've been getting soft around here, as Dec. was mild.

Waiting for the ""Conventional motor oil is just fine !" guys to say something...... :D

For the southern folks that normally don't see cold - take extra care, frostbite ain't fun.

Condolences to Big Dooley, sorry to hear about your Aunt.
