Things I do and don't like about my F-150

One thing you may not like about your F-150 is the way the 4WD operates.
Apparently, the front hubs are engaged when ever the engine is turned off. If in 2WD when started, the hubs are disengaged by vacumm. If the vacumm fails, you may not be totally disengaged and that can destroy the hub in short order.
I have a 2006 F-150...lost one hub already and my 4WD failed me my first working day in Vermont. If I have to replace it...this will be the second with 12-14 months.

Did not know that. Wonder why they would have it work like that. I do like our 2011. Thanks for sharing an objective review. Word is big some things are going to be a auto show. Hope it's useful stuff and not just foo-foo garbage.

9 out of 10 times when the 4x4 fails in any brand its from non use. If it fails to engage give the trasfer case a couple of wraps with a dead blow hammer while actuating it. I have fixed a few trucks this way. Both Ford and GM.

I traded my 2010 F150 5.4L 4x4 3.55 that gave me a consistent avg. 19.4 mpg, for a 2012 5L 4x4 3.55 that gives me 17.4mpg avg. My driving habit hasn't changed. 5L is nice but had no issue with the 5.4 either.

I been driving ford trucks forever and can say that they are simply to big now. In order to get a upper end version, like from the lariat up, only the Crew cab is available, which i have now with a 6.5 bed. It's over a foot longer then my last f150 supercab. I always liked the super cab and even they are to big. As said above, i too find the bed is just to high. Now that the ranger is gone,i cant even downsize and stay with ford. I'm not sure what I'll end up with on my next purchase. I doubt it'll be another over sized f150. Heck, they don't even give me the grab handle on the driver side A-post anymore to help enter the beast.
As much as I'll hate to do it, but I'll be looking at imports as well. If the big3 don't give me what i want, so be it.

I'm pretty sure the tranfer case is working...I can hear the hub starting to engage...just not fully engaging.

I do know what you mean by not using the 4WD system...and I am guilty of that (not operating it occasionally). IIRC, Ford does recommend running in 4WD for 15 minutes or so each month.

I use mine each week. I have owned about 15 4x4 vehicles and only had one failure on a S10 Blazer. My father and BIL have had just as many with zero failures. We all use ours all the time but my father is getting guilty of not using it unless I remind him.

Thanks for the write up. I drive a Jeep Commander right now. They don't make them anymore. I'm not ready to trade but have been curious about the F150 Ecoboost.

Radio
I think the radio is really under-par for a truck like this. The sound is not really all that great and the radio does not have the feature that shows the station and song like my old chevy had. It will tell you the station and song on Sirius, but not FM. This is something I really liked as you could see what you were listening too (song title/artist).
It has 4 gauges-fuel, oil pressure, tran temp, and engine temp. No boost gauge, and no bat temp. There is a digital tran temp on the driver display. The man. gauge is re-dundant. I wish that the drivers display (4 inch screen in the middle with fairly HD graphics) would have all the engine parameters available like battery, boost, etc. Also, since the bed is taller, the tailgate is taller and I cannot let the tail-gate down when towing my 16' flat-bed without it hitting square in the middle on my jack. My old truck tailgate would clear this by about 2", and it made it easy to get in/out of the bed. With the Ford if you drop the tail-gate the jack will hit it and you risk denting or scratching it.

I agree with the sound quality of the radio. I installed a subwoofer behind the rear seat which really improves the sound. Might want to check you radio settings. My 2011 and a coworkers 2012 will both show the station, song and artist using FM. Try hitting the text button to cycle through the settings.

The tailgate issue can be bad. I hauled a 4-wheeler in the bed while towing a camper and learned to run the tailgate cable over the latch pin. This holds the tailgate at about a 45 degree angle that worked for me.

As far as the gauges, they make pods for installing them in the vents or you can put them in the coin holder or 12v holes. I have a thread on that.

We had the same problem with one of our older F-350's with the hubs not engaging/disengaging correctly. After warranty was up we went back to manual hubs. My '04 F350 has manual hubs also, but I am told I can leave them engaged and they will be more like auto. I even think that the hub says "off" and "auto". I always set them manually and then unlock when finished. I normally use 4x4 at least once every month or two because I need it. It comes in real handy when backing up to trailers that are sitting off-road and keeps the ruts down.

I agree that the truck is a little big and unwieldy, especially in parking lots etc. But I wouldn't change it, I like the bed room and the cab room. I would have to take it into a parking garage on a daily basis though.

I may check the radio function again. Thanks for the tip.

That reminds me of when someone came to buy some hay equipment from us. I wasn't around, just my FIL and everything was wet and SLIGHTLY muddy. While they had 4wd trucks, they didn't use 4wd for some reason and they left 6" deep ruts all over the place.
They came back to get a couple of other things (already paid for) the next week and were annoyed when I refused to let them drive back. I insisted them taking the golf cart down and me pulling the things they bought up to the driveway with the tractor. I have mostly filled the ruts in now, but they aren't welcome back on the property.

That is one thing I like about my SuperDuty. It has manual hubs and a manual transfer case.

And my next truck will have them too!

I haven't had any 4x4 issues with any of GM's---Ever...The 83 K5 had the backup to release (stupid) but that was my only ever complaint.

I only use 4x4 when I need it, not as a maintenance issue...I used to run them to 200k without issue.

I have a Jeep Commander. It's full time 4wd with electronic limited slip diffs, front and rear. The diffs will go from free wheeling to full lock as needed. One of the best systems on the planet. But I wish I had a little more ground clearance and more room in the wheel wells for taller tires.

Good luck. I have not seen a manual transfer case or tranny in a few years.

Chris

The plant manager who runs the foundry I work at has a new (no more then 2-3 years old) F-250 with a manual transmission, transfer case and manual hubs.
He did have to special order it as it was (apparently) deselecting options that are more or less standard equipment.
Anyway, I never buy new...an older truck works for us.

My biggest gripe about my 2011 f150 is that its really more of a car than a truck when it comes to hauling or towing. I guess that's why it rides so nice when its not.

Not sure what car you are using for comparison. How low is your payload? My truck doesn't even have the max payload option and it is rated to tow 11,300 lbs and 1835 payload. Haven't seen too many cars with those specs.

There seems to be quite a few "Which Truck" threads on here so I'll add my $.02.
1st off-The Truck. I had a few requirements when I bought my truck last year to replace my '03 Z71 Chevy. First off, it needed to be crew cab. 2nd-it needed to have a real 6.5' bed. Other than that, the field was wide open.

The 2nd requirement excluded the GM twins(I only buy 1/2 ton for personal use), although I liked the styling of the GMC much more than the others. I opted for the Eco-Boost in the Ford, betting that I could squeeze a few extra MPG out of the turbo motor over a V-8. Hopefully the extra equipment and computer stuff will hold up.

Truck is a basic XLT package, but it has most all the options I want/need. Power windows, p-locks, cruise, a/c, 4x4, electronic rear locker, 3.55 gears (would have got 3.73 if I could have found one), Sat Radio, single-CD, cloth seats (I really like the front bench with fold down console). Price was $34K+tax, drive out a little over $36K. This was the best deal I could find.

Truck bought in '12 (as a '12 model). Currently about 12K miles, which is about 2x what I was putting on my chevy. Since I have two kids we much prefer traveling in the crew cab over our older car.
Fuel Economy and Power
Things I like about the truck-the ecoboost engine has ample power. This thing will flat out go and is smooth in everyday driving. I really like how the engine responds and it pulls trailers really well also. The non-towing mileage is OK. Right now I'm avg. about 16-17 mpg all around driving, which is about 1-2 mpg better than my old 5.3 Z-71. If you are looking to buy a truck I would say not to get the EB for the added milege but moreso for the power and torque. I have not driven a 5.0 but from what I have seen the EB gets about ~1mpg better, which is exactly what the sticker says. On the hwy the mileage can really vary depending on speed. If you can keep it at ~55 mph you can easily get 22-23 mpg. On a slow cruise at say ~45 down back country roads I have gotten as high as 26 mpg. 60-65 mph I get about ~18-19 mpg, 65-70 about 18 mpg, and anything over 70 and you're going to get 16-17 mpg tops. BTW I was hand calculating the MPG's for awhile but the numbers always came out very close to what the computer says. Also when refueling I noticed that the "Fuel Used" gauge is pretty accurate, down to a .5 gallon so I started going by the computer. BTW these numbers have all come on fairly short cruises, I have not went on many long-distance trips. Most of my medium distance trips are about 60-80 miles of hwy driving. I have taken one or two 2-3 hour trips and ended up at the 18-19 mpg mark traveling on the interstate at 60-70 mph. A few times I hit 19.9 on medium trips.

Crew Cab
Other things I like-the crew cab is really, really roomy. In my opinion this is where the Ford shines over the rest. I looked into the GM twins, Toyota, and Dodge. I didn't look at the Dodge very seriously but the crew cab room in the Ford really outshines the GM trucks and they do not offer the full-size bed. Toyota shrinks their cab to get the 6.5' bed. I believe that the Ford is the only truck that offers the same size cab regardless of bed size. Another thing that is handy is that Ford offers a re-tractable step just in front of the wheel well that you can kick out and stand on to be able to reach into the bed next to the cab. When you're done you simply kick it back in and it locks in place. This is very handy, especially since the trucks are so much taller.

No Tinted Visor on Windshield
Things I don't like: I didn't notice when I bought the truck but there is no tinted visor on the windshield. There is a part in the middle that is tinted and makes a "F-150", but the drivers and passengers side are not tinted and that really bugs me. The back windows are factory tinted, I don't understand why the front windshield is not tinted with a 6" strip like most other trucks I have seen. I plan on getting the front windows tinted soon and I'll have the window guy do the windshield also but IMO this should be a factory option.
A/C Speeds and Vents
The A/C only has 4-speed settings, and IMO, it really needs 5 speeds. There are no vents to the rear seats, and that's a shame because to get the entire cab comfy you have to blast the air from the front vents, which freezes out the front occupants while the back-seat passengers do not get enough cool air. My '03 chevy ext. cab had rear vents, I do not understand why Ford chose not to put them, especially in a vehicle with a cab this size. With the controls the jump from speed 3 to 4 is too high, I wish there was a 5th speed.
Radio
I think the radio is really under-par for a truck like this. The sound is not really all that great and the radio does not have the feature that shows the station and song like my old chevy had. It will tell you the station and song on Sirius, but not FM. This is something I really liked as you could see what you were listening too (song title/artist).
Gauges
One more minor thing-there is no battery gauge. This really bugs me. We may not really need one anymore but I didn't even realize that I didn't have one until I had owned the truck a few weeks. Not a real major deal, but would be nice to have.
Bed Height
One more major thing I don't like about the truck-bed height. I know that all the manuf. are doing this, but why does the bed need to be so freakin' tall? I'm 6'3" and I find it difficult to reach over into the bed and grab anything. If it weren't for the retractable steps most stuff would be out of reach. To me it's one of those things that looks good but is less functional. I know all the manuf. are doing this just like putting those huge wheels on but IMO give me an older trucks bed height and 16" wheels and that is much more functional.

I hope this was informing to those who are interested. Overall, I really like the truck and I would buy another. I really wish I had a chance to drive a 5.0 so I could compare it to the EB.

Nice review!

A few points about your "dislikes"

Rear vents - you would need to step up to FX4 or Lariat plus models to get rear vents in the center console pod for the rear seats

Stereo- Was an option on my '06 FX4 crew to get "Audiophile" stereo with subwoofer

May have been an option on your XLT don't know! If you would have custom built and ordered.

The big 3 have gone the way of the imports in this way that you get options ABC with base package, options ABC+DEF and options for more $$ to customize with mid grade and A-Z with top package.

Just my observations/experience

It is an option to get the Sony system with sub but they are expensive and get poor reviews. Most agree it is better to get the base sync system and improve with aftermarket components for less money and better sound.
