I have an X485 and the power steering works fine. But if I quickly turn the wheel back and forth, it has a shudder, or skip feel. Is this normal?

I had an X485 for a few years and I don't recall the steering ever behaving like that. I would check the hydraulic fluid level.

Does it do this at both low and high rpm's?

Shudder in mowers, tractors, cars, and trucks is caused by intermitent pump or supply line blockage or starvation. Easiest solution is to air up the steered tires, so the required power assist is less. After that, check for a pinched return or supply line, low fluid, or a worn steering valve. If that's OK, there is usually a friction damper adjustment within the control box that could be tightened a bit. With low friction, the steering assist can become 'unstable'. It acts just like a power transistor: you put a little power in and get a large amount of power out, and in the same direction. That's why some machinery has a steering damper.

My guess is that is a fluid supply problem. But, with higher tire pressures, you will need less boost (assist).
