Definitely defined as a crucial weld , I would think a kid would not have been trusted to make such a crucial weld.I believe a provenwelder wpuldhave been a smarter choice with whoever was foreman over welders

Well the kid had cert papers, probably passed a welding test with the employer and had at least close to a Journeyman status with the Pilebucks. Sometimes ****** weldors get through

You see it all the time! I've worked from Alaska to Long Beach California, always amazed at the quality of journeymen, and certified weldors.
Pier 66 downtown was my first superintendent job. I walked by a kid welding on this wave break, and I could tell he was welding on the wrong polarity by the sound of the weld! I waited until he stopped welding and told him he needed to switch his leads because he was on the wrong polarity. He stood up and said, "I don't know how much you know about welding, but polarity means nothing". I couldn't get to the office fast enough to get his pay check, and get him off my job. I fired 12-weldors on this little welding project.

Sounds like the Pile Bucks need to re-examine their apprenticeship program. I was always particularly impressed by the effort the UA 32 and the Puget Sound Laborers put into their apprentices. Eastern WA Carps seemed well taught too. I can't comment on Ironheads or Puget Sound Carps, and while BM's were well trained, I don't think they received anywhere near the breadth of vocational education the Pipefitters did.

But the overall lack of training throughout construction is something that really sickens me. Not so many years ago, individuals had an idea of what other trades did and how they all participated. People understood at least rudimentary how a whole building worked. Now individuals barely know what their trade does.

I really don't know much about the Pile Driver's apprenticeship, I went through a Millwright apprenticeship in California. When I moved up here the Millwrights and Pile Drivers were in the same hall. Being a certified weldor it was only a matter of time until I got dispatched out onto a pile driving job. I do know the guy who use to teach welding in the Pile Driver's apprenticeship. I seen him get run off at least 3-jobs. One time at Sea-Tac airport, we were running conveyor in an underground tunnel from the south satellite to the main terminal. Me an another guy were installing the conveyor, this welding teacher was way down the line installing the side pans, when ever the elevation changed or a curve he had to cut fit and weld the side pans. The side pans are usually wrapped with a light angle iron with about 12-GA plate, maybe even thinner. This teacher made the biggest mess out of these side pans you ever seen:eek:! Soon as the superintendent seen what he had done, he got fired. Guess who had to remove all his work and start over?

I will throw a little gas onto the fire...

Regardless of the quality of weld...the metal is weaker around the weld and under stress caused by the heating and cooling. Unless you can heat the entire part to below molten and hold it there for many hours the stress will remain.
